I am about to embark on running a new Mongoose Traveller 2e campaign. As they have incorporated the Bane/Boon mechanic in 2nd edition, I was thinking about making the following offer to my players when we do character creation.
Players are allowed to roll one stat with Boon (roll 3d6 drop the lowest) but HAVE to take one stat at Bane (roll 3d6 drop the highest). Stats to receive this boon or bane must be chosen before rolling. Only one bane and one boon stat. Totally voluntary: they can choose to roll the six characteristics as per normal and assign the numbers after all six are rolled, if they want.
What do you folks think?

I don't know why not, it won't alter the stats much, but the players will feel like they have more control.

Sounds fun. Are you making them roll stats in order or just the bane/boon stats?
the math should be fine. Hell in my experience I'd get higher with the bane than the boon.

If they choose to use the Bane/Boon option, they have to pick which characteristics get each before they roll. The other four (or all six, if they opt out) get rolled and then assigned however they want.

I definitely wouldn’t. Remember, these are starting stats. All sorts of shit can happen to your character before play, which could well leave you with a REALLY low stat of two. @dtpints ended up with a laywer in a wheelchair in one character generation session I joined him in, and Lynn last character was almost crippled in this first term. I’d let the system decide the stats without a bane/noon option.

Something Bill did was give us three rerolls to use throughout the whole of character gen. This was star wars traveller so I blew all mine trying to get force powers. I didn't get them, but it was nice having a little safety net there. Maybe have three Boons available during the whole of chargen.

My house rule is to roll stats in order, then choose to add 1 to 1 stat or swap two stats. This doesn't answer your question, but it felt good writing it.

So, two of my five players chose to take the option. One, his "bane" stat was a 7 and his "boon" stat a 9. The other, her "bane" stat was a 9 and her "boon" stat a 10. Mechanically, I don't think it really made a difference.
Also, just as a side note, one of my other players made it through four terms in the Navy (flight) with all her DMs as +0. Except one, which was a -2. She mustered out at age 34 at Commander rank.
