So a friend of mine that is a little bit of a munchkin gamer has a group that plays DnD every week. He always asks me to join, but frankly I have joined a few times and their games are just to... uhm... typical dungeon crawling and murder hobo'ing (its a word now!). Anyway, I had a night off coming up, so I decided to offer to GM one night for them if they let me pick the system. The GM was so happy to play he offered to buy dinner for the night. haha
Anyway, fast forward to last night. I show up with Monster of the Week. I explain the mechanics, they stare at me blankly. I explain character creation, they stare at me blankly. I explain "Its all about the fiction".... doubly blank stares... I push on!
I walk them through picking playbooks and moves. Everything goes fine. Then we start the connection phase. At first, everyone just stared at their playbook. I gave suggestions on how it worked and someone was like "Oh ok. That's fine. What you just said". /sigh It took awhile, but people started to get it. Next thing I know everyone is totally into it. Like crossing out their first boring connection and making them more interesting! The group's normal GM is blowing his mind at this part of the game, saying stuff like "Why doesn't DnD have this?"
We start playing... Everyone is totally into it. Besides the me having to remind people to "Just tell me what you are doing. I will tell you when to roll." it went crazy well. Everyone had a blast and people that normally don't do any talking in character, went full on accent and everything! It honestly made my night.
More and more, I feel like systems like PBTA or Fate or Cortex should be required playing for gamers. It helps people who have only ever played one system, have their eyes opened to other types of play. I think even if this group never plays a narrative system again, at least their DnD might have more roleplay... or so I hope.
TL:dr I ran MotW for a bunch of DnD only players. It was awesome! More people should play more types of games!
