Regarding tappy and Joey's comments around Star Wars combat and being slow with things like the Miniatures, there is a very light Fighter pilots (of Battle of Great Britian WWII) RPG called The Few. I haven't played it in its pure form specifically, but did get to play using that system when Rich Rogers (of the Gauntlet) ran it as "The Rebel Few" about rebel fighter pilots in battles around the Star Wars cannon. It was light and has some mechanics but mostly around following and supporting pilots... which means you can narrate those mechanics however you want, which made a very light game with heavy story game possibilities. Fantastic. Joey: Congrats on running after that time. Yay, more great GMs!!

The “Star Warriors” expansion for “Cartoon Action Hour” has an amazingly elegant ship combat system (at least it reads like it, i haven’t had a chance to try it). Front lining narrative descriptions supported with simple rolls. Before a dogfight begins both sides negotiate optimal positioning and range (using abstract range bands like “too close!” And “only visual confirmation”). This is each side making sensor scans and sizing up the opponent/threat.
Once a side chooses to engage, both sides start making rolls for maneuvers and fancy stuff (narrative leads) and basic firing mechanics with bonuses from the pilot stats and ship advantages (sensors and junk). Sounds like it plays out very fast and tense while keeping the story front and center. Also appears to be very simple to staple onto any other system. Just an FYI for anyone shopping around for different ship combat systems (also I could see it easily working for pirate style sailing ships, as it’s so abstracted).
