Stork has made several comments about horses that come from Iceland being able to amble, as a particular skill (i agree that they look adorable when they amble). Horses that can amble were commonplace and sought after throughout Europe and the near East, right through to the widespread introduction of mass transit via rail. Any mention of a palfry or jennet in texts through the medieval and renaissance is describing a horse used for long distance travel, that could amble. Rounceys were more like the horses we commonly see today. They were used for shorter journeys made more speedily and were bred and trained to walk, trot, canter and gallop. The reason that jennets have persisted in Iceland is because the geography and geology of the country prevented the introduction of rail until much later than elsewhere. Oh and the cute factor just have helped.
