So here is an interesting thought discussion: Is the theme park in Westworld a sandbox world or a railroaded adventure world?

The definition should be:
Sandbox - minecraft
Open world - skyrim
Linear - mario
On rails - Light Gun Games.
If we go by computer game terms.
And my take on this in rpg game types:
Sandbox - created world without a set adventure
Open world - created world with a ready adventure that the characters can ignore without the gm pushing back.
Linear - a set adventure with determined parts that have to happen in order.
On rails - room after room with only one way to pass through.

I'm glad JiB was there for that mapped vs unmapped discussion. I'm right with him about using a map when it is appropriate and if they are not necessary then bothering with them. Games like GURPS really lend themselves to going either way.
As a player, sometimes it is hard to turn on and turn off our bend toward tactics. I came to RPGs after a pretty good youthful stint at chess, so when I look at a map, my brain clicks 2-3-5-or more moves in the future. I have to avoid playing a character who wont think like that if a map is present.
As a GM, when combat happens, if it is not high stakes, I don't bother with the map. If it is a set piece, then the map will be there.
