Empire of the Petal Throne self published in 1974 and then published by TSR in 1975 - so, yeah, it pips T&T to the post. Aaron

Absolutely - the old sagas are full of tragic heroes who become cowards and either die in disgrace or seeking redemention (either way, they generally die) Henry V by Shakespeare is full of many characters who you could see their faults, that require Henry denounce them as part of becoming worthy of his title, as symptomatic of PTSD. Even Falstaff, he became a knight so he must have had some true virtue to begin with - could his early experiences had led to his alcoholism and dishonourable lifestyle/conduct. Aaron

It wasn’t recognised so figures are dubious at best. For context, though a later time period, consider that in WWI the condition we now call PTSD was labelled ShellShock: and that was for those lucky enough to be treated as many more were simply executed in the field for cowardice by their commanding officers. Gotta say. Here in the UK taint means the trace of something bad. I don’t think the British have ever found a need for a slang term for the perineum. Stu Venable seems to blame AEG (and now FF) for wilfully using a word with such a “hilarious” double meaning. Personally, I think the HJ crew should just ... grow up. There’s gotta be a similar unfortunate coopting of a word in Britain Kainguru ? But “bugger me” if I can think of one... Wombat: ‘Eats, roots, shoots and leaves’ doesn’t work as a joke in the UK. They think it means ‘to rummage around’ as well as being part of a plant. But we need not ‘fanny’ around need we? Aaron

TBH honest I only adopted the 'kid friendly' moniker because it was being used and I disliked the alternate being proffered - which was 'raunchy'. Simply because I felt that that term was even less apt as a description Really, it's basically less 'and beer'; which is even more nebulous but the most appropriate Aaron

Well I didn't actually bring it up. Other people did and, in reading their observations, I made an observation. In fact it wasn't until other posters identified the issue that I thought it was an issue. Rather they identified a factor that I hadn't taken into account and, in reflecting, agreed that they had made a valid point. I said 'Safe=Bland'. Others coined 'kid friendly': what is 'kid friendly'? it's not the local pub where adults go meet and greet with an age restriction on the door, it's the 'family restaurant' (or whatever one's Country calls them) that serves alcohol for the grown ups with a bar ... it's safe. That's not a bad thing but it is also bland: people go but it's not like calling in at your local to unwind after hard week at work It's also the other observation cited many times throughout this thread - the 'and beer' is missing Also not 'less good or bad' just different - conflating being 'different' with being 'good' or 'bad' is restricting the your understanding of the issue. An issue that is real because the question was asked and here we are pages later. Just like the change in format has been cited time and time again - mainly the change from being an auditory experience to being a more visual production. Absolutely, given the number or respondents who have echoed the same concern, it's not the same listening experience during a commute since becoming a vcast. Vcasts are great but 'they-do-demand-more-commitment' because they have to be watched Aaron

I have to disagree, I think by 'cleaner' you are observing 'more polished'. The show became 'more polished over time' mainly because the mistakes of the past were learnt from - 'gang rape joke' = faux pas = 'we ain't gonna do that shit again'. The other learning experiences that made the show 'more polished' can be found firmly entrenched in 'dead horse topics' - that place 'we-dare-not-look' (until Storks generational genetic breeding program comes to fruition and we have the kwisatz haderjack) - no more 'great crunch debates' (by debate I mean argument, by argument I mean I'm sure they drew knives or guns, but it was pre-YouTube). This 'polishing' was good. the show improved, listenership grew. It's hard to ignore the the salient fact that Twitch has correlated with a decline in listenership. Maybe it's the Twitch filter, maybe not - but the change in the tone of the show was palpable. It wasn't the previous organic change with growth, it was a sharp bootstraps and straight jacket change. HJ suddenly became kid friendly ... sorry, but fuck that shit. The kids have plenty of vcasts tailored to them and HJ is suddenly trying to compete in a different niche with greater competition and it's losing - because of that competition. People drive Mustangs on weekend track days because it's the weekend and it's a track with no speed limits and it's not the VW Polo they drive to and from work the rest of the week; but more people own Polo's than Mustangs. I really think that conflating 'gang rape jokes' et al with the less twitch friendly style of podcast of the past is disingenuous, and wrong. That shit wasn't acceptable then and it isn't now - I'm more disturbed that people claim to be looking at that period of time and saying they've come to that realisation. The two are not the same. HOWEVER - there is the concept of context. Nothing is forbidden when it comes to humour and sometimes offense is, well, not offensive ..... depending on the context (and the intent). Numerous comedians have hours of dialogue devoted to just this premise (more recent Ricky Gervais on his NetFlix special). I remember when the Fringe Festival Organisers declared "there is nothing inherently funny about terrorism, there never will be, we will not tolerate any attempts at humour using this topic because it will never be funny"; aside from flying in the face of the well documented sociocultural role of humour in helping groups process trauma, here we are 10yrs later and terrorism jokes abound. Final point HJ was never 'for the kids', it was a podcast for those adults with kids to get away from the little fuckers for a couple hours. That's the whole 'shooting the shit vibe', the same reason we go to the pub with our mates for few hours: to talk bullshit, be profane and not worry about setting a good example (even be hypocritical to a degree: 'don't drink to excess son, don't do drugs' while trowing back another JD and passing the dutchie to the left hand side) Aaron

Maybe that's the problem - Twitch. Not all platforms are suitable for everyone and the benefit of 'coming on board' is actually destructive rather than constructive. HJ's is trying to grow it's audience but maybe the demographic from twitch just isn't appropriate (or maybe it is appropriate but the Twitch filter of conduct mean's they'll never get to know). Marketing theory and product promotion is all very well and good - except for a simple truth 'Safe-is-Bland' ie: I don't eat at McDonalds because their burgers are the best, it's just the convenience. If I want a good burger I know small cafe in downtown Brisbane that serves THE BEST burgers . . . except it's in Brisbane and I'm in the UK, it's always busy, it doesn't open til late . . . Aaron PS: If you lose 2 listeners for every Twitch listener you gain, is it worth it?

I’ve fallen behind but the podcasts are still downloaded every week - the reason for falling behind is private/personal life shit hitting the fan and taking priority. There is one small change in the presentation of the show that I have noticed: since switching to video streaming there is an unintended bias, at times, toward there being more visual engagement. When the podcast was audio only it really was like having a bunch of mates talking shit, and being entertaining, while one went about other mundane tasks. Video is great, but it does require more commitment to attend to it. There is also a culture shift in the internet in general - it’s becoming more polarised. I don’t think that’s anything the show can avoid, it’s the times we live in - sitting on a fence in the court in of public opinion results in both sides trying to push one into the other group (as an observation of how the internet is now, not specifically this show). They say you should never discuss politics in polite company, but everything seems to be political now - even when it isn’t. I will also admit that I was concerned with one of the format changes - when the show became more ‘structured’. That works for FtB, because that IS FtB - the differences in these shows are just as important as the similarities: they can survive side by side but not if they’re competing for the same niche Aaron

And the SCA has been going for far, far longer. One could argue that ‘LARP’ as a term was merely a branding exercise Aaron They were larp before larp was cool. You probably never heard of it. JiB That's what I meant. Before LARP there was SCA (even backwater Brisbane had a chapter in '82, then we got The Knights Bachelor who used to forge their own weapons and armour on a home made forge) Aaron

I dunno, JiB, if I would call it a larp. Most of the folks I did SCA with were just stick jocks. There is certainly that element, but they play dress up and hold court, and there are intrigues and plots, so it's a larp. Cheers, JiB And the SCA has been going for far, far longer.
