I’ll be honest, I’m part of the problem. I don’t listen as much as I used to, but it’s nothing to do with the show. My life has been hard this past year, and while I’m finally putting the pieces back together I have a tendency to shut out friends and even if it comes off a little stalkery I think of you guys as friends. Add to it the crazy that has been the new and politics of the last year and well, I was just elsewhere. That said I realized I needed to pop out of my funk, and let the lighthearted podcasts back in my life. I’m back, especially when the description says Tappy’s one of the hosts. I missed the token numbers man.
Actually part of my life changes is my newish career that lets me listen at work, and I’ve been going back and catching up. So some changes I’ve noticed: someone else said it earlier and I have to agree the show has been a little too PC? Professional? Structured? I dunno be it was missing that HJ spark. But the the relatively recent episode where everyone was drinking Stu’s “water” had me rolling in spades.
Sound quality is a bit lower than the studio shows, BUT and it’s a big butt I’d say still better that 80% of the rpg podcasts out there.
I love that you guys talk about new and fresh rpgs. Heck of the physical books I’ve bought lately 2 list at least some of the crew as play testers. I do wish we had an edition war or something to rant about. Maybe with pathfinder getting ready to launch a new edition?
Talk about the weekly games a bit, and bollocks about spoiling the APs. I don’t listen to many of them, but want to hear a bit about them and sometimes that makes me go pick them up too. I do wish there was an easy way to sort the AP feed buy game or something... but that’s not really an issue here.
Tyler used to do another podcast via Skype, maybe get him back on sometime? Keep Tappy coming. I don’t hate the new crew, but I do miss the solid Stu, Stork, Tappy and whoever else days a little. That said Kimi is gold plated solid gold and does a good job keeping the rambling at just the right level of ramble. But for every Kimi there needs to be a Stork.
AP one shots of odd systems with a bit of help on the mechanical side would have me listen to more APs.
I shouldn’t respond to these things at night when I can’t sleep. Hopefully some of this helped. Hopefully at least half of it made sense. Good night Jackers. You’re still in my top ten casts, even when I wasn’t listening.

So I'm listening to a handful of old episodes while working on a "big tedious project." I can kinda narrow it down to either season 15 or 12. I was outside painting so pausing and making a note was kinda impossible. The crew mentioned a horror game where you play as yourself. Gear is what you had in your pockets. Stats were kinda voted on, I think, as in the group could veto them somehow. Well, color me interested. I want to look up the game, only one problem, I missed the name. Help me forum, you're my only hope.
-Cheers, Riff.

Hoi Chummers! I'm back to playing RPGs regularly and have been "forced" into running Pathfinder for a campaign. While I'm tying that campaign into a nice little bow (I'm guessing a month left) I've started preaching love of my favorite setting Shadowrun and the 6th world. Here's the rub, what edition is the best to start my greenhorns on?
I know this has been hashed out before, but almost all the posts I've found are years old and speak of waiting on books that have since been released. It's been a few years, AFAICT, so is there a clear answer? Is the picture clear?
Some background on me: I started with SR2 and 3. Did most of my playing in 3rd. I played a little bit f 4th and bought my own books because it was what was available. I changed groups a few times and lost access to the older editions, so when I started running the games, I did so in 4th. I've run enough 4th t know what I'm doing, but it's been a few years so I will have to relearn some stuff. Knowing that I have to learn, this is a decent time to get into 5th... But is it worth doing? I have access to the pdf's sent by my old GM (Thanks to Sam my omae) and because I was curious during my dark times (no gaming for 4 years) I bought the Herolab license for 5th ed and most of the add ons.
My group: Mostly played Pathfinder, I think 1 guy has played something else, I know 1 other has played some older white wolf under my old days. I've been running the groups game for a while, +6 months. I've known them all at least 4 years. I know I've got one murder hobo (combat focused person) but the rest should be fun schemers. Imagine this, all of the party has worked corrections (prison officer) for at least 4 years. These guys should be a blast in the 6th World.
Stuff I have access to: Herolab character gen software in both flavors. 4th ed "core" books in dead tree format: 4th edition, Augmentation, Arsenal, Unwired, Street Magic, Runners Companion, and the gm screen kit. 4th ed pdf's almost all of them, I think I'm missing Mil Spec Tech and Deadly Waves and that's it. 5th ed pdf's "core" books: 5th ed, and the equivalent of the 4th ed books listed above in DTF.
So which version should I be setting up? Is the jump to 5th worth making? Is 5th edition "complete?" Did FastJack ever resurface after the SEARCH incident?
Thanks all. Riff

OH! And how's the GM Screen? Worth the investment if I don't really use screens anymore? Let me word that a little better: is the GM screen worth it's price (~$13) as a quick reference guide alone?

So I ran to the (NS)FLGS and harassed my friends to borrow what they have as evaluation before purchasing and here's what I've laid my grubby little mits on: Core Book (drive thru rpg) Psions (loaner) Mercenary (loaner) Fighting Ships (loaner) Core Catalog (loaner, must buy) Spica Career book 1 (only thing flgs had)
Curious if you recommend the other class~ish books scoundrel, scout, dilettante and the traders and gunboats book.

Okay, I'm going to do it! I've got a group of good players looking to step away from Pathfinder for a bit, they want into my neat world of other game systems like Fate and Savage Worlds, but the ame I accidentally sold them on is Traveller. See we were talking about licensed games and the official Firefly came up a few times. I mentioned that Traveller pretty much does it "better" and told them about the character gen system and well sold them on the game... only one smallish problem: I don't have Traveller and only kinda grok the system. Now I have time, we aren't gonna just pick this game up next week or anything, but I have committed myself to running a Firefly~esque Traveller for some friends in the "not so distant future."
Now I've done a bit of research on Traveller before, and have been looking for an excuse to add it to my collection for awhile now anyway. Most consensus points me toward the Mongoose version, but what books should I get? Go ahead, give me the big list of "you might like" here, and please tell me what the "gotta haves" are. My plan is to listen to a few actual plays, buy the books, make some test characters with 3-5 "tours of duty" (can't remember the correct term for character building phases, run some mock combats and make sure I grok combat, and use these test batches to kinda establish the backdrop and setting for our mini campaign with hopes of leading to fun and going as long as it needs to.
Also any little tips on things to pay real close attention to while learning the system would be great. I figure I've got a month to learn and acquire this system before we even think of sitting down for serious play, so if I have to go in blind I can, but any of you old hands guidance will be vastly appreciated.
Cheers to you band of n'ere-do-wells for any and all assistance.

So, I've been away for almost 2 years... What are the good campaign management softwares these days? Are wikis still god? Mostly system agnostic, but I'm planing either Pathfinder or StarWars unless I convert more Dresden followers after buying all my friends the first book on the kindle sale today.

My gaming group are currently enjoying Sword Art Online and are interested in trying to mimic the experience in a Table Top game. Other examples of the genre: .//HACK:anything, Ready Player One, some Shadowrun and Hackers (the movie) moments. Basically the setting of the game is both the real world, and a fantasy MMO. The plot is solving problems that transcend the game world and spill over into the real world. My first thought on how to handle this is to run the whole game in a light narrative system (thinking Fate Accelerated, for super simplicity)and run the MMO in another system that feels particularly "gamey" D&D 4th edition. I could even go as far as letting the FAE rolls and system supersede the 4th edition rules where needed and otherwise lacking. So far this idea has a lot of support in my group, they wants it. But if I'm going back to 4th ed I need to cut down those combat times... Anyone remember the monster health math fix? (full damage 1/5 health I thought I remember) Any other ideas or comments? Thinktank time! Sadly the D&D part might not be as negotiable as any other part of the experiment. I have a few players that never got to try it out and would like to see it even if just for window dressing our MMO combat feel. I really don't foresee many problems, as in world combat will not come up as often as an actual D&D campain and some things can be handwaved and superseded. Thanks all. Riff

Sadly my wife and I are almost fans of this show... We have a 3 year old who watches far too much for us to truly enjoy it. +1 to the image though.

I'm a GoodReader user on my iPad 1, mostly using adobe native on my Kindle Fire. I keep GoodReader on my phone and my core go to games in my dropbox and that way I have everything with me at all times.
Forgot to mention GoodReader does have tabs and saves your last page as well. It's speedy enough... if you can find a stripped down version of the PDF. Honestly half the problem is that wonderful formatting we love in the book version slowing down the mobile version. Backgrounds, nifty scroll work on the page borders, hell even the art, can all hit the road in my mobile version and make me very happy.

I have 2 of the bad list in the fridge right now, a #9 and a Sam. As for the good list Guinness is the only one I would drink. Oh man wasn't just a year or so that I was asking for beer tips? Dark side can forget cookies...

Ugh, I'm easily the Tech Guy in my group of flesh-bag friends (net guys have me beat) and I get so tired of "fixing" things that took a 3 min google search and a 5th grade reading level. I almost when into system admin, but egads what a headache.
One of my best and worst stories came from the same event: I had turned my desktop into a private World of Warcraft server that could only be accessed through my WLAN. The group of friends would come over and the 4-7 of us would pull out our laptops and enjoy WoW without all the griefers and have a blast. Then a few decided they wanted to play in the "real" WoW and got real confused why the couldn't just use the character from our private little playground and why they needed "two copies of WoW" on their computer. (I had made an easy shortcut to run my wow and left a default shortcut for Blizzard's on the desktop as well) It only got worse and eventually I pulled that plug. It just took more effort than it was worth.

It appears I don't have to ask this question...
Thanks to all for having walked this road already. Now to go buy MG Traveller PDF's.
