Thanks for sharing this. I am fan of Fantasy Flights board games and if I had all the money in the world I would try out their Warhammer Fantasy. I liked both the old WEG and the Saga Edition, but wouldn't say either one of them was perfect. I'm really curious to see what the come up with, but I can't bring myself to spend $30 on the Beta rules. From the message board I gathered Lucasarts frowned at the idea of a free pdf of the Beta rules. Also I don't like the 3 core rulebook route. I guess it's successful for FFG's 40k line, but my understanding with 40k is you wouldn't play a Rogue Trader in a Deathwatch game. (disclaimer I don't know shit about 40k ) But your group in a Star Wars game might want to play a Bounty Hunter, a Jedi, and a Cocky pilot. That will be 3 core rulebooks please: Edge of the Empire, Age of Rebellion, and Force and Destiny. And all three books in the same Darth Vader-y Time Setting. I just don't see how the books wont have a lot of cross over material. Oh and I'm not over saturated because I don't play video games, or watch the new shit. I might read a Star Wars comic every once in a while but mostly I just like the old movies and the Rpgs.

I am now scouring the internets devouring Star Wars FFG hearsay Lots of people complaining about how FFG's last Beta Only War had a free pdf but this one doesn't. This comment on a blog I found most intriguing "Lucasfilm considers PDFs to be electronic games, even if it's just a virtual version of a book. Since it's an electronic game, in order for it to be a licensed Star Wars product, a licensee needs to have a separate license with Lucasarts, the video game arm of the Lucas Empire. Which means if you want to put out PDFs, the Star Wars license costs you about twice as much." blog knighterrantjr.blogspot.com/2012/08/i-can-feel-conflict-within-you.htmlThat actually sounds backwards enough to be true. Also I learned lots of people do not like "New" special dice for a roleplaying. Which I find humorous.

Danger Will Robinson! A blog comment from someone who bought the beta book "One very important note is that the game appears to include zero real setting information. Anyone buying this will either need to be familiar with Star Wars or have access to other books for background info I suspect that won’t be a problem for almost anyone interested in the game." Also the dice look like the Warhammer Fantasy Symbol dice I have no idea how they work. Since the dice don't exist yet they provided stickers for the beta players to make their own. starwarsdice by joshcupp, on Flickr

Charging for the beta? Wow, talk about corporate insanity if that's the only way FFG are allowed to put the beta out.
As for the custom dice I'm not overly fond of those either, just feels like they're going a bit too far with the "In order to play this game you'll also need..." mentality.

I believe someone mentioned the book has a conversion chart to use regular dice. But it's not the make or break moment for me in a game. I have the standard D&D set, and a fudge set. Another set wouldn't really bother me. The way FFG explains the dice mechanic is interesting, but they don't get into details. "Where other RPGs’ dice systems determine success or failure as a binary state, Edge of the Empire’s custom dice allow for a rich tapestry of narrative possibilities. For example, you might succeed in wrestling a Gamorrean to the ground as you planned, but in doing so your blaster might fall from its holster and slide just out of reach. On the other hand, you might utterly fail in your attempts to lie to an Imperial customs officer, but in doing so discover that he’s open to bribery." I haven't played any FFG Rpgs so I don't know if that is how Warhammer Fantasy 3rd Edition works because it has funky dice too. I kind of wish they had gone the Warhammer Fantasy 3rd route instead of the 40k route. Meaning an expensive box set of geek porn that way you could have those little cardboard stormtroopers, the dice, etc.

The Order 66 podcast posted a Demo game from Gencon. Episode 162 start.d20radio.com/home/the-order-66-podcastThe Dice mechanic seems similar to Fate. Where a dice roll is more than just a success it helps create the story. Also no map and minis required.

I got to thumb through a copy briefly at Gencon. I didn't have the time to take a good look at it, but my impression was that the beta isn't really playable? There seemed to be a lot of places where modifiers to various rolls had not been inserted, etc.

It's a Lucas Arts thing... they think a pdf is an electronic game so they charge more for it to get the licensing for the game. FFG could not give the Beta way because of Lucas Arts' contract terms. And they can't give you a discount on the final product for the same reasons. I'm not paying for a Beta...

Fray doesn't read my posts I wouldn't mind paying for the Beta, if it was to help cover printing costs. But $30 plus shipping for a unfinished book is way too much. I think $15 (maybe $20 with shipping) would be more reasonable. But some people will buy anything with a Star Wars Logo on it, so I'm sure it will sell well.

I did not enjoy the Warhammer 4e setting, it was too game-y for me (even more than dnd4e), and I found the dice mechanics horrible; this one seems to be following on its footsteps, so I won't even try it. The saga edition was fine, if not for the ludicrous power creep, and frankly every other game system can do star wars, savage worlds is ideal for it, gurps if you wan't a more gritty ( for ex. dark times) experience, I've even run a successful mutants and masterminds Star Wars campaign. I can't see how the setting could benefit from a board game-like system, it just seems backwards to me.

"Where other RPGs’ dice systems determine success or failure as a binary state... " Yeah. Just because a game system uses "regular" dice doesn't automatically mean the mechanics are a binary success/fail kind of thing. I tend to think that most newer systems realize this is a pretty boring way to do things. The only system that hasn't really caught on is the 800-pound fantasy juggernaut.

I've been reading up on the early comments on this, and I can't decide whether it sounds intriguing or pretentious. Never played another Fantasy Flight game, so I really don't have a frame of reference for how this system works at the table.

If this is anything like Dark Heresy or Deathwatch, then this new version would be awesome. The level progression was quick, but the monsters were either easy or very difficult. But that's 40K, it's Death or Honor! I also enjoyed that my character's class title changed at each level. There were eight career paths to begin with, and with each level progression your career path title changed (no more boring Soldier for 7 to 10 lvls before picking up a prestige class). Say you wanted to play a Stormtrooper (guardsmen in DH). At start you are a Conscript (a grunt, you are the lowliest of the low). The next step is Guard, then Armsmen, Sgt. Vet, etc. Eventually you get the chance to specialize, in which there are three different paths to choose from (some classes have divergent paths earlier on in their careers). You need to be looking ahead to see what skills and feats you can get in each path, as you may get Dual Wield Blasters earlier in one path and later down the line in another. Star Wars needs a grittier feel to it, and FF is one of the best companies to make that happen. FF makes character gen rather simple, giving you a random chance to choose where you were born, which determines which classes are available to you. this then determines your wounds and so on and so forth. A name generator is included, along a quirk chart, and other cool things to help round out your DH character. I enjoy DH, and I hope they took that model and moved it to Star Wars. If it's vastly different, or some weird mechanic, I'm just not sure it will be the same. I guess I could always pull out Saga or it's precursor. But I would like to see SW in the d100 system, as it is in DH and DW, I believe a new system will give the game new life (though that means Lucas can finally finish building his death star ::sigh: . I'll give it a shot nonetheless, and post a review (someday, lol).

I have 2 d100 systems and as much as I like them I have never found anyone else that did. *sigh* In other news if your local gaming store has a copy of this you should pick it up. I never noticed before but the Beta is a Limited printing of 5000 copies . FFG's store is out of stock. One of the 2 stores near me might be getting some. My usual FLGS has yet to confirm whether or not the order any. They're already on ebay for $50 plus shipping.
