I want to create a short adventure/campaign that will teach my players the Shadowrun system and ease them into a cyberpunk setting (none of them have any experience or knowledge of cyberpunk).
My plan is to have them start in a presingularity world and they will unknowingly become the catalyst that will enable A.I.s to become self-aware. The biggest concern I have is that the Shadowrun system is really meant for the setting along with all of the fantastical elements. Has anyone run Shadowrun without the fantasy elements and where the tech is a few generations older than depicted in the books?

You can probably modify the system to remove the fantasy stuff pretty easily. It's still a cyberpunk game. I haven't ever run it that way, but I *have* run Shadowrun where none of the PCs had magic, and magic just didn't come up too often.
You might be overthinking your introduction, though. The system lends itself to a very simple, street level game, which might introduce them well.
Try this... make them all a small street gang. Ignorant kids, barely out of their teens, who know very little about the world and how it runs. Each adventure can introduce them to new elements... an adventure about combat, an adventure about the matrix, an adventure touching on magic, etc, etc...
A few sessions of that, and they should be pretty comfortable with the concepts. Then you can start a real Shadowrun campaign.

So Shadowrun would not be the best system for the type of adventure I mentioned?
I've been debating on whether I should try to repurpose the Shadowrun system to my ideas for the adventure, or run it in something like GURPS. I think I will put that on backburner for a GURPS run and come up with something a bit more Shadowrunny for Shadowrun.
Thanks for the input. It helped push me in the right direction.

I don't know that Shadowrun is too far off from what you're describing. You'd end up limiting the options a person has, but... it would work. I guess to me, the deciding factor would be weighing how much work I'd have to put in to run it in Shadowrun, vs. how much work I'd have to put in to run it in GURPS. But that's just me.

Ohhh!! Sorry, I misunderstood your purpose here! I thought you were trying to find an intro game that would introduce your group to Shadowrun, so that you could *play* Shadowrun! You're just wanting to run the game you described, and wonder if Shadowrun is a good system for it? Absolutely! I think Shadowrun would be an awesome system for your scenario. Obviously, you'll have to re-skin it, remove some stuff, etc... but the system has a great feel for just this sort of thing. And it has some good rules for AI and "in the 'net" sort of interactions, for when dealing with all these new A.I.s. Sorry for the confusion. No, I think it'll be great. And since you're not using the setting, it's easy to just eliminate the magic. Also, if you're looking for slightly lower-tech, you can check out Shadowrun 2050. It's the 4th edition rules for the original Shadowrun setting... which is to say, it's cyberpunk future from back in the 80s, when they didn't know yet about wireless interfaces, nanotech, and the like. --Pukka Tukka

Wow, I had not heard about Shadowrun 2050. I will definitely need to check it out.
I'm still unsure if I want to use Shadowrun for my idea, but I will certainly delve a little deeper.
Thanks for the help Pukkatukka and forresst.

Just remove magic and monsters and you'll have everything you need.
