So I've gotten the core rule Mongoose Traveler book for Christmahanakwanzika and so far it has not disappointed. I see there are quite a few supplemental books and I was wondering if anyone would have any recommendations or warnings. "Oh don't get book ___ it's not really worth it because ___."
I get that some books are more important than others depending on the type of game I'd be running/playing in but at moment I have no idea what sort of games I'll be involved with.
I'm assuming that "Supplement 4: Central Supply Catalogue" would be a reasonable purchase. But some other books that have me curious for example are the Compendiums and the Campaign Guide.

With Traveller, it's too difficult to say, because it's going to depend on the specific type of campaign you're going to run.
I can say I really have enjoyed the "Starports Unlocked" book, but that may largely be because my current campaign is focused on a newly built Starport, and it's growth and evolution throughout the game will be a major plot point.

Central Supply Catalog is full of the stuff adventurers need. It's a handy reference.

Second that it depends on the specific type of campaign you're going to run.
I got weak and have bought many of the Mongoose Traveller splat books over the past few years. I'm a junkie. Also, I can't separate out my own biases here. (Disclosure: I'm into the "high tech, low life" aspect of Traveller. The more piracy, scavenging, and drifter-ing the better for me. Also, the more clever "mini-systems" a book has, the more I like it.)
In the games I've run, I find myself turning to a setting book for the campaign (Reft Sector, Spinward Marches, Trojan Reach <in the Aslan book>, Beltstrike, etc., Twilight Sector, Far Avalon). Also, the Referee's Screen is indispensable and great. Both 760 Patrons and 760 Patrons 2nd Ed. gets used a lot. When there is interest in a certain aspect of the game, like mercenaries, thieving, piracy, psions, etc. there's plenty of material in the associated books, including patrons, mini-systems, gear, ideas, etc. So I use Agent, Mercenary, Robot, Scoundrel, etc. for those. The Central Supply Catalogue gets used a lot especially by those who are gear focused... it's inspiring and useful. The 1001 Characters just doesn't work for me for some weird reason. Starports has been a lot of fun recently and is versatile.
Here's my full confession:
Mercenary: love it High Guard: not a wargamer person so only so-so Scout: very good, addresses the survival, procedures, and lifestyle of the "institutional explorer", ie. spying out the land for conquest and acquisition LOL Psion: we played around with it and it didn't stick with us; felt fiddly Agent: love it Scoundrel: really enhances the game for me Referee's Screen: very nice and essential Merchant Prince: nice but not necessary for the "misbehaving" groups not strongly oriented around the details of trade Dilettante: nice Robot: a little broken but fixable and fun Central Supply Catalogue: inspiring and useful Civilian Vehicles: nice 1,001 Characters: just doesn't work for me 760 Patrons Second Edition: outstanding 760 Patrons: useful Cybernetics: not essential, tries to tack-on pre 90s cyberpunk trope without making it feel like transhuman sci-fi IMO; it's decent Animal Encounters: neat... allows generation of wild life kinds using the "career" format to model their evolution Dynasty: just got it, not sure what to make of it yet Beltstrike: very good Prison Planet: very good, fun to hold over players if they get caught and caged Secrets of the Ancients: not that into it Tripwire: not that into it Spinward Marches: good Reft Sector: very well written and thought out; anything by MJ Dougherty is worth the money IMO Darrians: good Sector Fleet: okay Starports: useful and good Strontium Dog RPG: really good and expands on the bounty hunting rules in Agent
Looking forward to the Campaign Guide, but I imagine I could do without it now, ha.

You forgot the most important Traveller supplement, Slough Feg's Traveller album.
