Looks like they're also releasing a number of the classic module series in June as well. WotC, reprinting your childhood since 2012.

The biggest challenge to D&D Next . . . Given that 'Next appears to be trying to emulate much of 1 and even more of 2e . . . 2e has been around so long now that there is a virtual library of resources available to houserule the game you want to play and advice to avoid any pitfalls inherent in the mechanics (ie we all know which 2e supplements to avoid because they broke the system - *cough* elves *cough*)

I played 2e for around a decade, and like all games I mainly GM'd it. You would think I would have nostalgia and want to play it all again, but to tell you the truth I don't.
I'd much rather have the "fluff", the 2E era Forgotten Realms was amazing, and then you had the Planescape, Sigil, Starjammer stuff. The art of the era was really good too, at least all the oil paintings by Caldwell, Eisely, and Elmore. I'd buy myself some of those if they were reprinted, then just run it in 3.X.

SpellJammers *sigh* - why didn't it get more love? It deserved it but the follow up materials were so rushed and poorly done. I just loved the whole ships in space thing and it gave a logical way to link different campaign universes with the crystal spheres . . . Though 'my' crystal spheres were 'infinite' internally and I treated them in much the same way as Michael Moorcock's Multiverse (moving about and forming conjunctions and alignments). I got a £5 copy of the old Players Option Skills and Powers off amazon last week and flicking through it you can see where a lot of D&D 3.x grew from . . . 3.x wasn't so much as a radical reworking but more of a tidy up of many ideas that were floating around long beforehand. The bit that surprised me was it had disad's for D&D characters . . . I'd forgotten about that option and wondered why they dropped it afterwords. They even acknowledged that having disad's can make for a "richer roleplaying experience" . . .

I use to frequently say that 1st to 2nd to 3rd was a fairly gradual change, nothing like 3 to 4, but the 1st end guys really really hate to hear that. I generally think that 2nd to 3rd is just standardizing lots of the Complete Books of blah blah optional stuff, and a general common sense overhaul. All +'s being good and all -'s being bad blew my mind after a decade of THAC0

The big fault with the original 1e to 2e change was dropping some of the 1e core classes and races. That was what always bothered many 1e players . . . However all of those missing classes and races made a reappearance eventually in one supplement or another (either as a kit or class option in most cases) . . . If TSR had made that clearer I don't think so many people would have objected at the time.

I like the idea of the new books coming out, but I still play 2nd and I prefer to buy cheap used books from amazon instead of buying new ones. I still have my black phb, dmg and mm from the 90s and I don't need new ones.

I have so many of the 2nd Edition books (and am constantly collecting more and more of them on the cheap) that I don't think I want to spend a chunk of money to buy new versions. Shit, we have a 2nd printing DMG we never use. It's in Mint condition. The only book I needed to replace (our one MM that was falling apart) I just got for free from someone on Reddit. Reprint 2nd Edition Dark Sun with Brom's artwork and then maybe you'd get my dollars.

You can put together ALL KINDS of stuff with loads of good ideas on the cheap. I especially enjoy finding stuff I didn't even know existed the first time around. If WotC every truly reprint 2nd ed stuff, I hope they do more than just the core books and get to the stuff that is really rare, hard to find or just truly valued. The Dark Sun stuff is a great example. Spelljammer is a great example. The settings are what really kept my interest in all these years. The stories and the art was glorious.... and all with all things with such longevity, they would really benefit from some sort of final statement. Some supplements *sort of* contradict each other, others just refer to something that I can't get my hands on anymore. If they made... I don't know, a super deluxe boxed set of any of these. Like a big beast of a box for Dark Sun... less fluff and more meat... even at 100.00 dollars, I would buy that if it meant putting everything together in a one easy spot. They can add more artists... but Brom was so integral in even how they eventually envisioned the world.... he's got to come back too.

In principle I feel this is a good thing. However.....
I predict the price will be somewhere between highway robbery and rape.
The only lubrication they will need are your tears of nostalgia.

Dark Sun was so interesting and I'm a huge fan of Brom's art. The updated stuff for 4E lost a lot of the dark aesthetic his art informed. I just can't take such a gritty setting seriously with bright colored, illustrative styling. It worked great for the rest of 4E, but I miss how different the art styles of all the different settings were back in 2E days. Planescape was also beautiful and alien.
