I want to run a space opera style game and it seems like Traveller is a system that is pretty much desgned for that. Problem is that I am totally unfamilliar with the system. I was trying to use this site www.travellersrd.com/content/official/mongoose_traveller_srd/mongoose_traveller_srd_index.html to figure out if I like the system, but I can't even figure out how it works from it's SRD. I want to know how much the Traveler universe is fused into the rules, if I like the rules system, and what character creation is like, but the SRD seems totally unhelpful. Am I missing something, or is Traveler really a difficult system to learn?

Hello I am also recently come (back to) Traveller. Are you referring to the dice system or more the fluff? The dice mechanics are actually quite simple. Role 2D6, and add them together. Add any Positive Dice Modifiers (DM) Subtract any negative DM If the total is 8 or better you succeed. The DMs are conditional modifiers based on the environment, situations, character skill level, and how the player describes their actions. I am happy to discuss but if you were looking for something a little more I need a little more clarification around your question

I was mostly looking at the SRD to see if I like character creation and the way the skills are Itemized. also, I am curious how important is the flavor to the system. can players create thier own alien races? Are there rules for that? How much rules are provided for ships, can you custom design ships easily?

You can easily run any sci fi campaign without using the traveller universe. You just take what you want and/or modify stuff as needed. Though it's combat us pretty gritty/deadly - guns kill and they can kill fast. Mongoose forums etc will give you guidelines for toning down the grittiness for a more space opera flavour. Aaron

Aliens and ships are both addressed in the main book. - Creating alien races it pretty simple. Start at Page 41 of the core book. - creating and modifying ships. Start at page 105 of the core book.
Skills are a little more complex. Skills brak down into two types. Basic skills and specialized skills.
Basic skills are ranked up as a single skill. So Astrogation is ranked up point by point.
Specialized skills are a skill category with a number of specialization under them. Drive is a good example. With a simgle rNk in drive you get a 0 in the Drive general skill. This allows you to use your drive 0 for any of the three specializations (wheeled, tracked, and mole). Any further points in Drive must be applied to a specialization. If i get two ranks in drive and specialize in wheeled, I then drive any tracked or mole vehicle at a +0DM. Any wheeled vehicle I get a +1 DM.
Character creation is a lot of fun and needs to be done as a group.

I got Mongoose Traveller! If you want to try making a character in Mongoose I will make them with you! I love character gen in Traveller. It's like a minigame all its own.

The only part of the game mechanics that *might* be setting-specific is character generation, as the careers and subsequent tables might not exactly fit another setting.
Careers could be created by the GM easily enough.
