Re: The GenCon email....
Ooof... Where to begin. There was so much misinformation in that email....
Mailed vs. Will Call badges: I've done Will Call since 2002 and have never been in line for more than 20 minutes; with the exception being 2011 when there was a massive, unprecedented influx of last second pre-regs (which do not get the option to be mailed out). I switched to Will Call after driving out one year and half way there not being able to find my badge... Even if I am in line for an hour, the piece of mind is absolutely worth it.
GenCon Dates: While there are events scheduled for Wednesday, GenCon officially is Thursday through Sunday. All the Wednesday events are there just for ease of coordinating all the unofficial events that people have set up and run.
Event PreReg: all the events do indeed not sell out. The popular ones do, certainly. If you aren't Johnny on the Spot, you won't see a Call of Cthulhu even, for instance. However, there are plenty of events that don't sell out, and more get added as time goes by. Including some that get added after pre-reg is over.
Hotels: Unless you are pre-regging VERY late, you will get a hotel room. You may not get a GREAT hotel room... But you will get one.
The Dealer's Room: It won't take eight hours to tour it. Not unless you're bound and determined to spend a lot of time at all the booths. I tour the room on Thursdays, and then periodically check back. I can make my way through the whole of it, stopping at the booths that I had a specific interest in, and be out again in an hour or two.
GenCon is absolutely about the gaming. It's nothing like (my impression, having never been to it) ComicCon. Aside from the Dealer's Hall, everywhere you look there is gaming. Also, you won't be paying $150 for an autograph. I have never seen them going for more than $25, and I believe the money usually goes to a charity (but I might be mistaken). There have been a lot less media guests in the last few years, but prior to that there were plenty of people that would sign for free. I got Ron Glass' signature on my Serenity RPG and didn't have to pay for it.

I agree with everything ayslyn said.
Wil Wheaton was not charging for autographs last year as far as I know, nor was Nichelle NIchols.
