Now I want to play a Risus Rifts game, so my Rogue Scholar can actually read your Glitter Boy to death.

It's no surprise the TPK game was a success.
The newer Retroclone Dungeon Crawl Classics starts players out as a 0-level character (that I believe is randomly rolled) so instead of a standard class like Fighter or Thief you're a 0-level Wainwright.
You then go into a dungeon and try to earn that 1st level class.
The rules suggest making "as many as 4" 0-level characters so you have better odds of getting a first level character.
It's a bit silly to me.

Kind of fits in to the Pathfinder discussion down in that forum though. In that, some GM's like to think of player classes as "super heroes" instead of just a career decision made by a normal person. I talked about the NPC class tables given in the 3.0 books that didn't make it to 3.5 and up. How I personally disliked that every town seemed to have a level 8 fighter as sheriff, and even the waitress counts as a level 3 rogue. If a lot of people die at level 0, it makes even the level 1 special. Not saying it is for everyone, but it DOES make the PC's that survive that much more special. It is kind of the opposite of the Forgotten Realms where it seems potion stores have bottling operations, magic swords are sold at discount if you buy them in bulk(scimitars always come in 2 packs while sheaths only in 3's), and you get to be a level 1 cleric for walking past the Church doors and tripping on the carpet.

Most likely this is a direct response to all the Monty Hauling and level up cowtowing in recent years. The pendulum swing attempts to put some player respect back in the game. Not sure I like the idea of GMs riding that pendulum swing like Slim Pickens rides the bomb in Dr. Strangelove though.

There are many ways to view player characters in relation to the rest of the populous.
1. The characters are a cut above, they are the top n% of society the odd man out the unusual one who left home.
2. They are just normal Joes thrust into this situation and they have to figure out how to survive if they can.
3. They were normal Joes but they were taken at a young age and trained for this. (An example of this would be the Mord-sith from Legend of the Seeker)
Just from these three (and I'm very sure smarter people (that would be all of you)) can come up with more. All are equally valid it's a matter of what sort of game and what sort of character (it's ok to mix them up) you want.
