I hear you, fordperfect. I have difficulty with languages; actually with book learning for that matter, and I am a charter member of the held back a grade twice and a repeat university drop out. Mentors gave me my trade or I would have ended up being a writer. The career path I am now on in Poland. 16 years of kindergarten, school and a legislated French culture surrounding me and I needed to be tested as an adult undergrad to arrive at that conclusion (as well as assess my strengths). I have done the convention circuit as a speaker with Micha³ Mochocki, part of the team of Dzikie Pola and a local translator for WotC, touting the benefits of RPGs to language arts to small audiences of blank faces. This led to me playing a game in Polish… Ja Bull Rush! Ja Cleave! Listen DC, prosze? Magic Missle! And then some words from the GM I obviously did not understand but did not need on a battlemat anyway. This was almost to prove me wrong about the benefits to language from RPGs. It quickly ended that hope for an income (practicing English using RPGs). Who needs language when you have a D20 in hand? It was the most alienated game from a story I have ever played – and that takes into account all my experience. And I won, of course. God I wanted this woman when I was younger: Kosherinfidel, Thanks for the encouragement. I appreciate it. There are a few people I can more than stomach. To be candid, my under-the-poverty-line economic base plays a part in what I can have for friends (and being shut out from friends by people I gathered together.) I can put together a dinner and some hot drinks like tea or coffee but paying for a movie ticket is well beyond my means. I made $20 this year so far and it went towards our groceries. Last year I made $100 USD. Electronic equipment is way more expensive here than in North America. We also have a trip we want to take to a wedding in May, which we have known about since December. Apart from blocking the time on the calendar, there is not much else can be planned on no income. We even have free accommodation for two nights if we can get ourselves there. And, of course lots of food from the wedding.

To CreativeCowboy:
Good luck with your struggles to find a good gaming situation. Given what you're facing as an outsider, I do feel for you. Like many people, I've been relatively lucky in having a group that may not always play but could if we wanted to get ourselves organized.
If the new group doesn't work out, you might want to consider much of what the HJ crew suggested.
First, you might want to try a different scenario. Even though my go-to game back in the day was successful, I got somewhat burnt out with my D&D setting and running it. This may ultimately not amount to any sort of change, but if anything it will make YOU feel a bit better. You obviously seem attached to this other game, and watching it fail time and time again will only make it frustrating for you.
Second, perhaps you should move your creative energy elsewhere for a while at least until you can get yourself back on your feet. I don't know your situation and why you are without a job, but perhaps if you can manage to take the time until you get yourself a new job and some more income, you could consider picking up a cheap webcam for some Google+ gaming. Hell, I almost want to send you my own webcam since I don't really use it thanks to the built-in one in my newer laptop.
I had a third, but I realized that I'm running late for work and have lost my train of thought. Don't get too discouraged! Keep on keeping on!

Creative Cowboy, I'm sorry if this is a downer but things are still not much better back here in Quebec.
Its true you don't have to live in a foreign country to be treated like crap, it's still happening Here!
Here's the kind of thing that CC was talking about vis a vis la Belle Province de Quebec right now!! It's even applicable to Gaming!!

CC, stay strong, man.
If you take the suggestion of playing for a bit, I have some suggestions for pbem.
Under yahoo groups look up ericandthepeons and MazeworksII. Neither are those type where people are trying to recreate Shakespeare when writing posts. peons is run by an army major who loves old school D&D (he refuses to acknowledge anything 3rd edition or after) plus runs a plethora of other games. Plus sometimes I run a savage worlds adventure there. Mazeworks has been running for 10 years and it's a multi genre game where we have seen 1920's Call of Cthulhu characters team up with Star Wars smugglers.

CC what are your current rigs specs (PC I mean)? I can send you mic's and stuff - plus I'm best placed being 'in' the EU (free trade therefore no nasty customs invoices etc . . . I buy a stuff from overseas and get stung for VAT about 1 time in 10 - thus I always request they mark it as a 'gift' to reduce the tax). How's your broadband connection? ie: what speed. Finally what OS are you running as I have a webcam with no vista/7 driver support that I was going to junk - works on XP native. Aaron

Oh, man, I've only ever been to Chez Geeks once and it was awesome. I spent 3 years living in Quebec City as a Calgary native. I speak french well, but with the wrong accent. I escaped Quebec last year.

Onto another topic from the episode, I like the idea of letting Stu and the crew do a bit of gaming one Friday night a month. Knowing how much I miss gaming on a regular basis, I can imagine it would be a nice relief for you all. And I'm a fan of the actual plays, so recording another session in place of a podcast would work. I'm a bit behind, but I'm going to catch up soon enough.
The only bad thing is that I know not everyone digs the actual play stuff. It's not really for everyone, I suppose.

We are going to take off a couple Fridays and game. The first one is in the beginning of April.
I may record a couple solo episode, addressing some selected emails that I feel I can address myself to keep up on the email backlog (which is getting extensive again).

Extensive email backlog is the sign of a successful podcast. I think adding back the bump and re-emphasizing the reach out to your listeners is doing well. Has that translated into any numbers on subscription or listeners? I notice more new names on the forum, people that return and keep posting, than I had noticed before.
I think the idea to turn a few fridays into a game night is awesome, in fact I can't believe it hasn't been latched on to before. You guys constantly get 4-5 people in that tiny room every Friday, that's like "holy shit, we could play a game!" territory.

Oh man!! That would make the chat AWESOME! We could be the GMs minions! A sort of Herman's Head GM experience..."what's the inn keepers name?"
rickno7: Fred! hyvemynde: Harry Ballz! d20pints: Crom!
Etc...I love this idea! Actual Play live feed. You could do it as a Google + so we get obnoxious videos as well...

Thank you all for your posts in support, and support on many levels. Remember, just because you argue with me here does not mean we are blood enemies. I like a good well-constructed argument. It shows you care. Maybe this is another of my counter-culture paradigms. Aaron, I will shoot you a PM when I get a bit more time. I am a painfully slow writer and I have things to write. ericfromnj, PbeM would be giant agro for others, I am afraid. Imagine the GM gives a description and requests two actions a week (for example). All I do is question, question, question and then probe the questions I got answered. that is the priome symptom of Player Skill. I used to be the slowest eater at lunch time in elementary school. So I stopped eating lunch. Role playing that way would not feed my hunger. Again, thank you everyone. I will post what happened in last Saturday's game on the Journey thread. (And create the link to that post in my opening post in this thread when it gets done.) Midnight Formula 1 is starting early in Montreal this year? I see the city has entered a car. www.lapresse.ca/videos/actualites/201303/20/46-1-un-col-bleu-seclate-aux-commandes-de-sa-chenillette.php/8248fdb42f004d65ae341ab42621c165

Was it this show or the one before - Grognards ? Anyway it's a French word that means 'old solider'. Originally adopted by miniatures gamers to describe themselves - especially if one preferred only gaming (miniatures) in one particular genre. It has since been adopted by the OSR crowd but it's proper use gets blurred at that point - originally, with respect to RPG's, it simply meant someone who preferred to continue gaming in an earlier iteration of any given system without concern for or interest in the release of newer versions. It's often used by some to describe people who are actively critical of newer editions but this is, in itself, a newer use of the term thus the current blurring of an exact definition from its original intention.
