I am trying to get into GURPS 4th Edition, but I can't seem to find a Bestiary for this edition. Why is that? Makes it tough for new guys to break into the system when we have to create or convert our own monsters! Is there a bestiary and I'm just not seeing it? Sounds like a good way to let a system die off. I realize it isn't Munchkin, but come on!

The Methodology changed in 4e and they are working on it but it is slow going.

We had Steave Jackson at a con this weekend and I brought up the question, his response paraphrased was its in the works but he doesn't know the status of it. I just started browsing through the books and the system looks very fun. I will have to plan a game for the distant future.

You can find a lot of stuff online, and if you're looking for something specific you can ask me or post at the sjgames forum.
3e material can still be purchased in PDF. The 3e bestiary stats are very easy to convert. The two main differences are:
- 3/e refers to PD (Passive Defense), which was done away in 4e. You can just use the DR listed.
- Hit Points in 3e were based on the Health (HT) attribute. In 4e they're based on Strength (ST). You can just use the HP listed in a 3e bestiary just fine.
The upside of no published bestiary is that your players can't make assumptions about what you throw at them. And I find the fact that everything can be tinkered with in GURPS to be liberating. Because any kind of character or creature can be made, you are free to create whatever satisfies your own internal logic and not worry about point values and deep details.

The big reason why we don't have a bestiary is that GURPS, unfortunate, isn't important to Steve Jackson Games anymore. If I remember their last annual repor lately, 70% of the profit comes from their Munchkin games. Man, I have nothing against Munchkin but I would have loved to see more fun and interesting GURPS books (like during third edition) instead of millions of good as identical Munchkin expansions and variants.

I don't feel like they've abandoned the brand, however. Between reviving 3e books in PDF and putting out new 4e content in issues of Pyramid, there's still a huge amount of content to mine. I hope the lack of a 4e bestiary doesn't turn you off the system.

I just emailed the show asking this same question about GURPS, why no bestiary? I should have come here and taken a look first but I don't make it on the forums very often. I just want to say that the GURPS Repository website is pretty good. I think it's clocking in at 310 monsters right now which is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks Mook for your post...also, congrats on selling your GURPS GM book. I bought it and read it; great read. I really enjoyed it and have referenced it a lot while reading through the Campaigns book. I especially like your combat review where you give a good overview of character creation information based on what your player is looking for out of a PC.

Yup, typically your only options are the fan made stuff (amazing resources) and there is usually a small offering in whatever genre book you are using (the dungeon fantasy line has a decent selection for example).
I think one reason there isn't a bestiary is that it would be huge. I would also like a book that has stats for everything from cavemen to androids and all stops in between both real and fantasy, but that's a little crazy.

I bet SJ Games could kickstarter the shit out of a 2000+ page, phone book sized, cross genre, beastiary...

Exactly why I think it's crazy to want a bestiary. Anything that's published would just constrain your imagination. Just make them up! You only need a couple of stats and a skill or two to make a perfectly viable enemy to fight.

"Let's see, futuristic dinosaurs... I think that's around page 1700... Yeah, right after 'Flowers-comma-Anthropomorphic' and way before you get to the heading: 'Grasshopper,' subheadings: small, big, monster, human-hybrid and robotic."
