I did miss this - and thank you.
5th edition Shadowrun has aroused my curiosity.

It's a great interview.
I'm pretty exited to see the new edition.

Shadowrun has always intrigued me.
I played the game on the SNES (god that game was balls hard), and really loved the whole decker/jacking in idea.
I had read that newer editions had moved to wireless technologies which put me off - I much rather the idea of ports into your head etc.
If the new edition is back to the older school cyberpunk I will be all over it. I just could never comprehend why they would change a fictional world to better reflect 'reality' - it would take one sentence to explain "in this world, wireless computing/networking does not exist - you have to physically jack in with a cable".

Just listened - confirmed it is still wireless, but the approach sounds pretty cool. Colour me interested.

One of the big issues SR was facing for a while was their anachronistic tech level. It's a struggle for future-based games, and the idea that we already had things now that weren't in the game bothered a lot of people. It also severely limited the players playing deckers from fully participating in missions.

Personally I feel Cyberpunk was a product of the late 70's and early 80's. A social critique and a sort of fear surrounding electronics not only taking over the purpose of humans, but taking over what makes you human as well. Reflected in that was that you were giving up so much to be the newest most high tech. Pieces of your soul might be conjecture, but pieces of your humanity was for sure being lost. It was dirty, grungy, how long could you ever be sure things worked as they were supposed to. Younger people might not remember those that spent 10,000 bucks on the newest electronic gadget to have it only work for a few months(and there was no replacement policies). Cyberpunk was not about experiencing the future, IMO, and never needed to stay "current".
I no more want super fast wireless tech in my Cyberpunk than I'd want DNA analysis in a 30's noir detective game.
When it all started getting Matrix and Apple style, all clean and un-tethered, it was turning into something else entirely. Shadowrun stopped being Fantasy/Cyberpunk and started being Fantasy/Transhuman. I feel it was losing the part of the genre I found so fun. The new rules look great, but I would still be grounded in around the 2nd Edition of the game. I'm not the only one even on this board that thinks that way. The 2050 book was a great idea and I hope they expand on offering that setting with new rules.

Making wireless communications really easy to intercept and monitor is a super easy way to force Runners back on the wire.

In the interview they say this was addressed by each corp having their own proprietary protocol for wireless. Basic 'freenet' wireless gear is useless for running, and breaches are detected and moved on swiftly.
I still think I would prefer cables - it makes a big difference to the flavour of the game (at least thats what I envisage having never played it......)

Having played a runner who was effectively stuck in the truck on every run, I don't have a problem with enabling them to actually be with the group while still doing their job. I fully admit that the aesthetic is less intriguing, but I also have a hard time getting frustrated with anachronism in settings based on our world. I think it's easier for the more hardcore folks to alter the setting to make it more like Gibson if that's what they're after than it is to convince a wide base of gamers that it's necessary for the setting to abandon technology we've already achieved for the sake of feel.
As recent media events show, there's still plenty of thematic, big-brother, fear of technology, Us against The Man to play even after you integrate the tech difference.
