My room is booked.
Convention dates: August 30th through September 2nd.
Sheraton Gateway Hotel LAX. This is, I believe, the last convention that will be at the Sheraton Gateway. From my conversations with Eric, the convention is moving in 2014 to a bigger hotel on Century, though I don't remember which.
No idea what I'm running yet.

Wow, now that's some non-procrastination I think the program said they're moving to the Hilton in 2014...never been there, hoping it's a step up and not a step back!

From what I've heard, it's a step up. And much bigger.

From what I've heard, it's a step up. And much bigger. Sweet. Some of the cons back east in my teenage years were smaller overall, but the meeting rooms were individual game sized, which rocked. Each game had their own little room, water cooler, bathroom -- you could really cocoon and there were no issues with uber-loud tables competing (unless of course they were so loud you could hear murmurs through the wall). Looking forward to seeing the change.

Due to lack of planning in a timely fashion I stayed at the Hilton for Gamex. The hotel is much nicer, but the rooms are slightly more expensive. One thing to everyone should be aware of though is that the parking is $30 a night. There is a garage for $12.95 a night right next door though.

So I know it's still a ways off, but does anyone want to share a room? Flying all the way over to LA (and then continuing on to Philly afterwards) isn't going to be cheap. So I'm looking to save money every opportunity I get.

From what I've heard, it's a step up. And much bigger. It's absolutely bigger than the Sheraton. The Linux convention ended up there because it was (I was told) the biggest hotel convention space in the area. It's a fancier hotel, no doubt about it. Eating arrangements are significantly different. There are two places to eat inside the Hilton. The restaurant is rather pricey. I like the food at the Hilton grill, but they've been overwhelmed each time the Linux convention has been held there and it has sometimes taken more time to get your food than you had between talks. I like the food at the Hilton grill better than the Subway near the Sheraton, however at the Subway I've always been able to eat fast and get to where I needed to go in good time. I'm not looking forward to more of the frustration of forty-five minute food waits and missing an event to eat at the Hilton grill. Last time I was at the Hilton for a Linux convention I swore I was just going to bring a sack lunch.

I've noticed a couple times that the hotel (where Strategicon is now) has set up tables to sell food near board gaming/CCG entrances. Nothing fancy: hot dogs and such. Hopefully they'll do something like that.

I've never eaten there. How is it compared to the restaurants?

I don't think it will be that way in the Hilton either. I'm sure some of the rooms can be configured differently, but I don't recall anywhere that you'd get one-table sized rooms. It's possible we'll end up with more RPGs (for example) in one room than currently. I could be wrong, but I don't recall where we'd get a larger number of smaller rooms.

It may not be $30 a night when the convention is there. I have never stayed at the hotel for the Linux convention, so I can't say what the price would be for that. However, for all-day parking the convention would validate your parking in the Hilton lot to get you a bit of a discount, so the next-door garage I used the first time the Linux convention was at the Hilton was only a couple of bucks cheaper. If the game convention also gets to validate (I don't know if that costs extra or comes with the convention space), it may be similar. In any event, if you stay at the hotel you won't use your car that much and can use the nearby airport parking if you wish, just like at the Sheraton.

It's possible we'll end up with more RPGs (for example) in one room than currently. Eww. That would be unfortunate. I was really hoping for "the same, or fewer." Two games in a room is usually adequate (though, of course, depends on the other table!), but I find three totally annoying most of the time. I think four concurrent games in a room would be too distracting for me to even play comfortably, never mind GM. Apparently I'm a prima donna (primo uomo?). Guess we'll see what they come up with. Worst case scenario, they'll think we're like board gamers and jam us all in one massive ballroom.

Worst case scenario, they'll think we're like board gamers and jam us all in one massive ballroom. There is a kind-of massive ballroom downstairs, large enough that the Linux convention has turned off the lights on one side and run laser tag there and still had room for kid toys like a giant kid-sized hamster ball, a lot of chairs and a couple of game consoles on projection TVs on the other. It has two more decent sized rooms opening off of it, the larger of the two is big enough to have had food, some board games, pool, ping-pong, and foozeball all going at once. There is another big conference room upstairs they do the keynote speeches in. However, assuming that they rent both, I suspect they'll be allocated to the dealer room and board games, so probably not too much danger of throwing all the RPGs into them. I think the other rooms are smaller, however some are still decent sized and could have several games shoehorned into them.
