Also that is not how you pronounce EN world.
You are supposed to pronounce it E N World.

I have huge respect for Gary Gygax, I wish I could've shook his hand in real life. He pioneered teaching the world how to play "make believe" in a new way. Few people ever re-invent the basics of human "play". Few people make a new ball, or a new stick. Gary helped bring about a new "make believe".
I don't think I've ever taken a dig at the man. I may poke fun at Gygaxian. I may have said he did not have the head for business. On a personal level, I admire what he has done.

I was more echoing your sentiment ie: the 'Saint Gary' with which some quarters hold him. I sorta figured we were on the same wavelength precisely because you identified the very same attitude I too dislike in your choice of words. Aaron

Who is this "Stephen" guy HosierRob keeps bringing up? He sounds like a jerk.
A ruggedly handsome jerk, but a jerk nonetheless.

I think it would be hilarious to do a satire based "Ennies" episode. Stu could bring out the sound board. Every curse word would get an animal sound. Every 10 minutes would be a "in D&D news" break. You could have segments "why D&D kicks the (elephant noise) out of Savage Worlds" and "D20, why its a better universal system than GURPS". You could have a segment called "We Introduce Our Characters" and mention zero backstory, only talk about their feats. Have an interview with Gary Gygax where after each question is 5 minutes of silence. It could go on and on and be wonderful... terrible yes, but wonderful as well. But me down for another person who would love to hear a satire-based episode on D&D. It would be side-splittingly hilarious. Careful there Sir! You kinda sound like your describing the way Dungeon World goes...with the characters and their relationships created right at the table. Jeeze D.T. Pints. You know I only have so much of that hippie Kool-Aid. If you guzzle it all I won't have any left to share around. Yeah. I was thinking of Apocalypse World-based games when the subject of character creation game up. Similar to Fiasco, a big part of those games is building the characters and the set up that grows out of that discussion. If I just slapped down pre-gens (meaning already filled out) Dungeon World or Monster of the Week character sheets for my con game players, the game would lose something. And forget about playing Monsterhearts with pre-gens. That game is all about the characters and their interactions. All that being said, I don't think every con game should be done that way. I probably won't run them now, but I was planning to do a few Ubiquity powered pulp games at Gateway 2013. Those games would have had pre-gen characters for the players to choose from.

On the subject of give-aways. I know Stu said that he pulled himself out of that unofficial competition, but he does often sing the praises of props and nicely created hand-outs. When I run my Fallout inspired game, "So You Want To Be A Vault Dweller", mood and evoking the world is very important to me. Everything I can do to give myself a leg up on that I'm going to do. Not only does it help the players get into character and the swing of the setting, but I expect that people drawn to that game because they enjoyed the video games. And if it's a case where there's a player who's not well versed in the world (which has happened), I want to introduce them to the world in a way that lets them jump right in. When I ran it for the first time in GURPS with DM Sam at Gateway, I made a point to set up the table not only to make it clear which table the game was at, but to let the players start their experience the moment they laid eyes on it. My "So You Want To Be A Vault Dweller" table. I'm also usually wearing a Vault 101 Jumpsuit. When I run this in person, I use Nuka Cola Caps (the currency of the Fallout world) as minis. (Which also serves in my mind as a reference to "Bill Cosby: Himself" when he's talking about making plans as kids. "I don't want to be the piece of glass, I want to be the Coke Bottle Top.") Everybody gets a cap and gets to draw a little symbol or their character's initials on the underside of the cap to use as a mini. I have Vault Boy images that represent the bad guys, which I show the players, but I use the caps with numbers written on the undersides for them as well. If you kill a dude, you get to keep the cap. Nuka Cola Caps V2Fallout fans really love handling these caps, and they're reasonably easy to make (particularly now that I have access to a laser engraver), and being able to keep some is just a little value add... Like JiB said, it's a "thank you" for playing the game. Also, it's kinda like insurance for me since I'm dealing with an existing world, if they aren't pleased with the way the game goes, or the mood was a little off, at least they walk away with caps in hand.

One thing I wanted to mention is how... animated Stu is when he talks on the mic. It was almost hypnotic!

So between that, and the fact that Fallout had begun as an attempt to make a GURPS computer game (but they couldn't get the licensing from Steve Jackson Games), I had to run it the first time in GURPS. Later, I ran it with Tentagil at Dragon*Con last year in Savage Worlds. I may run it next Jackercon. I'm not sure what system yet.

ORLY smartass? Edit: this is for DT Pints, not the other smart asses who have posted since him. The fact that you can type "smartass" in your forum and then realize you have to go back and specify which smartass you're referring to means that you're doing something right with your Podcast, ENworld be damned.

And a robot voice emulator for a Protectron..."I don't want to set the world on fire..." *wanders off whistling*

Just thought I'd drop this in here given the discussion about the Ennies that popped up: irontavern.com/2013/07/24/ennies-expose/I think the post and the comments say a lot about the Ennies system, especially the way the author complains a lack of transparency and being accused of not reading products then just flat out states that he nominated podcasts based on their length as he didn't enjoy having to listen to long episodes.

That's an interesting blog post. I can't imagine reading 150 different game books cover to cover in a few months. The amount of weird individual preference in what does and does not get nominated must be a tad bit ridiculous. And this quote is hilarious: Poor guy, the burps and profanity must have driven him over the edge.

Clearly there are better ways to gauge a show's worth than whether or not it won an Ennie...
