Hey Jackers,
So I just finished the third book in the series and think that Fate Core might be a good fit for a game in this world. The setting is pulp in an alternate reality where magic appeared in the 1800's. Not everyone has magic and the folks that do can typically only use one kind of magic and they have nick names - a Heavy can control gravity, a traveler can teleport, a Brute is super strong and fast, A massive can make themselves nigh indestructible.
The Grimiore nights are secret organization that fights to protect magicals from people and people from magicals. The Imperium is the Japanese empire pre WWII.
Anyway, the magic use is very flexible and on the fly with the casters applying their spells in a all kinds of variable techniques. It sounded to me like it may be a good fit because of the flexibility of the fate system but I am not sure how magical endurance works. Can anyone explain this to me?

What you describe at the beginning should be easy enough, but I'm not sure what you mean by "magical endurance". Do you mean how long spells / effects last or the quality of people who have their endurance enhanced by magic?

Hey man,
Sorry for the confusion. By magical endurance I mean a way to limit powers. Some magic users are stronger and some have a larger amount of power to use. I am trying to come up with a nice way so that yeah, you might be able to describe a phenomenal trick but it will cost you all of your energy.
I know Savage Worlds uses power points which allows you to make an existing spell larger then normal (a huge fireball) but one your points are gone you are done. Is there anything like that in fate?

I remember seeing somewhere the idea of adding a separate stress track to represent mana or whatever for casters. You could use your spellcasting skill to modify it in the same way regular endurance modifies your physical stress track.
Then you just need to decide how much power each spell uses. Maybe one per each shift of success. Or one per point you miss the target number by.
Be sure to dig into the Fate System Toolkit, too, if you haven't already. I think it's on Pay-What-You-Want at rpgnow.com.

Yeah, Dresden or FATE would work... I'd also go with Wild Talents. I haven't read the 3rd books yet... The second one didn't play out as good as the first one... I'll get the third though.

I'll go against the grain and say - why not hero system?
Edit: just realised this was the FATE sub-forum..... *facepalm*

To keep it in the FATE vein. Strange Fate SRD - arcdream.com/home/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Strange-FATE-SRD.pdfit's a bit more fiddly than regular FATE, but I think it's very cool. Also, it clearly defines power level 'tiers' Short version: pay refresh on your 'strange skill' and you go up in tiers, if you are on a higher tier than your opponent, swap out a dF for a d6 for each tier of difference. example: Superman vs. Sentry => same tier, each rolls 4dF+skill level Superman vs. Punisher => way not the same level, Sups rolls 4d6+skill, punisher rolls 4dF+skill. Books that use Strange Fate Kerberos Club Base Raiders - Kickstarter project, I have my physical and pdf copy, really like it, but I don't know if you can buy it out and about yet.
