Soooo GURPS!
Premise: A group of Victorian era fops build a time/space bending machine. It is a clockworky contraption about the size of a double story house. They get this machine working and it transports them to...... somewhere. A strange new world. Only thing is - they hadn't quite worked out the navigation yet...... The machine is literally wound up by a steam powered engine which takes a full 24 hours of fuel to fully prime the machine. Think an episodic, steampunky world hopper that's a bit like Dr Who meets Sliders meets Traveller.
Character ideas (off the top of my head): The scientist The engineer The mechanic The spruiker The hired help The financier
Suggestions for supplements?
I am seriously considering just starting with core books only - and bringing in high and low tech books when I can be bothered.
What do the GURPSy GURPSers think?

My dirty little secret is - I rarely ever use more than the Basic Set and Martial Arts for any game lol. I mean, I may crack open Low/High/Ultra -Tech if I want stats for a specific weapon or something, or Thaumatology if I want to tweak out Magic, etc. but that's pretty much it. You could absolutely run this with just the core. If I had to suggest another book I'd say Infinite Worlds for excellent tips and treatises on running world-hopping adventures, if you enjoy the "Infinite Worlds" chapter in "Campaigns." Regardless - sounds fun!

Thinking about this, I think I'll scrap the world-hopping stuff and do a steampunk / fantasy game.
Universe-hopping might be a bit too much to start with. I can always bring this aspect in later.

I agree with not starting with the universe hopping. You can start with the machine that drops the group into the steampunk / fantasy world. Just have the machine not work anymore. Think Sliders with getting the remote wet and no rice available to dry it out. You could have the players start in Victorian England in our timeline. They use a mysterious machine and get transported into the steampunk world. They probably won't be able to tell the difference at first. Many things look the same but something is amiss.

I agree with mook when it comes to the books. Basic Set is definitely all you need. You can skip Martial Arts though. Low-Tech is a good reference for equipment. If your players are heavy users of equipment then grab it, otherwise just give them the basics.

Yeah, just play normally until the steampunk peters out, then have ISWAT show up to recruit. Best of both!
