Then no XP for healing - but that doesn't prevent the former cleric from healing. Aaron

Well during the encounter it does...
And if the DM also awards XP for roleplaying/solving quests and during that time you used your healing abilities would you lose those as well?

I think that's one of those deliberately vague rules that the DM can use to tweak the kind of campaign s/he wants - specifically rate of advancement. 2e is replete with optional rules including optional options Aaron Aaron

You could start as a wizard at level 1 and then ask the DM to include the opportunity to train with a rogue to learn those skills and abandon wizard after a couple levels (Dual Class). This would work especially well if you're on a ship with other Swashbucklers. If your DM is nice enough not to make you start at level 1 (we always start at level 3) you could say that's your past and have a level or two in wizard and a level or two in rogue to start. In that case, as your DM, I would only give you XP for doing rogue stuff and character/story advancement - not for casting spells. But, as Kainguru said, every DM is different. Let us know what you end up doing!

I'll keep you guys up to date but I've decided that one class is enough. I was flipping through the Thief book and I actually found mention of this of this topic, if I had looked a bit harder for it... Anyway, here it is:
MULTI-CLASS "The Advanced Thief Types options are designed to add depth to a thief character. But if the character is already multi-classed (as are many demi-humans; e.g., a halfling fighter/thief), he doesn't really need any more depth. Therefore only single-class thieves can take one of the Thief Kits described above."
DUAL CLASS "The same is not true of dual-class characters. If a human character starts off as a thief, he may take any of the Thief Kits above. If, later, he decides to change classes according to the normal Dual-Class Benefits and Restrictions rules, he doesn't lose any of the benefits or hin-drances of the kit he chose; he is still that sort of thief."

The DM gave us 7,000 to spend on XP or as gold for equipment or levels. We used the optional rules in Combat and Tactics to roll stats which varies depending on how important the stat is to the class. I've never used this method so 9d6, keep the top three rolls, granted me an 18 in DEX and I also ended up with an 18 in constitution. My loosest stat was WIS with a roll of 11. Probably the most powerful character that I've ever rolled.
I mentioned that the DM that I wanted to use some of my points on a magical sword as an heirloom to fit my backstory. I was thinking of a Rapier +1 or something but then I found the Luck Blade which gives a bonus to saving throws plus 1d4+1 wishes. I liked the idea so I brought it up with the DM to let me have the sword with no wishes left, it's an heirloom so I figure that previous owners used up the wishes. He didn't seem to like the idea and we ended up digging through Encyclopedia Magica for swords that I could afford.
I asked if I could spend extra gold to make whatever magic sword that I got flashy with jewels or precious metals because... Well, because Swashbuckler!
I kept insisting that a sword +1 or +2 was good enough to meet my backstory wants and he kept offering different options. He was genuinely perplexed when I turned down a flame-tongue weapon because if it's extra damage bonus but accepted my refusal based on the Hide in Shadows Skill.
Finally he offered up something that fulfilled what I wanted. Which is this one:
"Vasgo GP Value: 6,000
Adventures in BLACKMOOR Vasgo is a very special, lawful neutral sword +2 with an Intelligence of 12 and an Ego of 10. Its powers are find traps, find secret doors, and see invisibility. It can also read magic and is blessed with the extraordinary power of telekinesis. It speaks Common, Dragon, Dwarf, Elf, Goblin, Halfling, Ogre, and Ore. Vasgo's jeweled scab-bard is worth 75 gp. The small emerald mounted in the buckle of Vasgo's sword belt is worth 1,000 gp."
It's way more powerful than I was expecting and he let me change it to neutral good alignment and turn it into a rapier. Ultimately, I'm a level 1 Thief/Swashbuckler with this unbelievable sword and great stats. I feel like a munchkin.
I haven't met the rest of the party yet but I think they are all elves or half elves because the DM made a comment about me not having infravision. I know at least 2 other players are multi-class. I wonder how much role playing we'll be doing. It might just be dungeon crawls but we'll just have to wait and see

I think you're on the right track with your anticipation of dungeon crawls. Sometimes those games can be enjoyable, though. If you start to get bored, you could always try steering the bus a little closer to role playing.

Yeah, this is my first game in 8... maybe 10 years so I'm looking forward to it. I'll be the only guy joining by internet so I'm concerned that I might get left out or forgotten but I'm opptomistic.

Played catch up without the rest of the party today. He hooked up my swashbuckler with a fighter played by one of the other players. The dungeon was supposed to be the final exam of an adventuring college but first the DM pointed out that I hadn't purchased any additional clothing and since I don't wear armor, to preserve my thief skills, so he gave me the chance to head into town to get more. I was like "Sweet, let's role play!"
I asked about local laws so I wouldn't get into trouble. Checked my gear, made sure that I had a safe place to stash all the junk that I didn't need for a trip to town. It was a short trip since it just involvedme picking clothes from the book and paying before returning to the college to address the other "mistakes" on my character sheet.
He was concerned that my level 1 rogue only had 2 weapon proficiencies because there's a rule in Combat and Tactics that said nonweapon proficiencies could be used for weapon proficiencies. I pointed out that I had checked that rule after I talked to him last and that rule was to reward fighters with high intelligence instead of using it as a dump stat. He insisted so we adjusted my proficiencies. He had me drop Ettiquette because it was useless and questioned when I wanted to keep Ancient History. He recommended/suggested ambidexterity since I planned to use rapier and main-gauche and was disappointed when I didn't want to drop more proficiencies to become a martial arts master out of the Ninja book but since it was my character he let me do what I wanted.
I figured I was ready and walked into the dungeon immediately followed by a comment about how I should have got hirelings first since the dungeon was designed for a full party. Turns out that if I leave the dungeon then I fail the exam. I kept getting hit because I didn't being a rangedvweapon other than a dagger amid comments about how I had the worst AC of all the players and how I could have played a Demi-human and multi classed to overcome my shortcomings. After a few near wipes for the 2 of us, we started bumping into NPCs that joined our party to help us push through.
The xp was plentiful since it takes multi class players a long time to level and I soon reached level 3 while the multi class fighter dwarf was still level 1. We didn't finish the dungeon and the last fight was a 45 minute marathon of poor rolls against a human fighter that no one in the party, PC nor NPC, could hit without a natural 20.

I did have fun though. I think that I will have more fun when I have the chance to shine as the rogue in the party. There was 1 trap that I missed, no locks, and my sneaky skills are 2 low to take advantage of backstabbing. This was my first combat heavy 2E dungeon crawl and it had a sharp learning curve.
