Hi guys,
I'm a bit rusty on D&D 2E and I'm playing a thief in a combat heavy dungeon crawl. I've only played 1 dungeon with the character so far with another player and the DM. I've got about 2 weeks before I play with the rest of the party so I'd like to learn as much as I can to help the party to the best of my abilities.
I'm used to a more RP heavy game (or at least I was when I used to play 10 years ago) so I wasn't prepared solely for combat. I did my best to use my thief skills whenever I could, mostly just checking for traps since there were no locks, failing my move silently rolls, failing my listen tolls, and being a terrible fighter.
I need help with using backstabbing to good effect and knowing when and how to make the most of my thief skills to help the party.
Thanks again for your support during my confusing character creation!

Thieves make best use of luring and ambushing in combat heavy dungeons. Make them come to you and devise all sorts of traps and what not. Remember you can climb walls so you can set up buckets, stones, furniture etc to fall on the heads of random monsters. If you have a choice in the matter, and the DM doesn't throw a lot of traps your way, be resourceful. Make the monsters play on their innate ability to mistrust each other, just watch what happens when you steal a purse from and orc and put it on a goblin's belt. Change the dynamic by being smart and not just an attack rating.

Stay in the back...hide in shadows...pick the parties pockets when they are otherwise occupied. STEAL AS MUCH TREASURE AS YOU CAN CARRY. When in doubt...RUN. And....hide in shadows. .

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind but I'm not sure how receptive the party will be to the idea of waiting while I set up traps. Since I don't know the party well, I don't want to call them munchkins... I just feel the odd man out since I'm the only human (no stat bonuses), the only single class, and the GM was frustrated that my AC at level 1 was only 6 which he said was the worst in the party.

Can you hear that?
That's the warning sirens blaring.
Take notes and remember to email the show after you have a gaming nightmare.
Kidding only kinda mostly aside... have you thought about saying screw your current thief and trying to match the Munchkins? I don't know if sticking to your RP guns cred is going to help you have a good time. Sure, you soul might stay intact, but its not like you're going to convert the group. If you want to salvage fun out of the hours and hours of work this game is going to be, why not try and get to their level and have what fun you can.

We had a 1 on 2 session with the DM. He put me and another player through a dungeon to get caught up on the story (more to catch up on XP, I think). I went from level 1 to level 3 in no time. The fighter/thief dwarf that the other player was using to support me since I didn't have a party never leveled. I think that I'll level like crazy off the xp intended to level the multi class characters.
As for RP... yeah, that's probably off the table. I'll do my best, though.
My fist session with the whole party is about 5 days a way so I'll definitely be updating how it went.

You might be out-munchkining the munchkins here - without even realising it.

Well, at level 3, my hit points are 12. At level 1 we were all granted max HP so that means that I'm already a contender for the highest hit points depending on constitution bonuses and classes.

That would be awesome! But I'm not sure I could make it since I live in Tokyo. I'd really hate to steal a slot from some one who could make it for sure and then not make it.

Well it is SEVEN DAYS... . And I think there might be a few bastards living in your neck of the banzai tree that frequent these forums...they might even run something if poked and prodded enough. pssst... HyveMynd. ( your line is "yes I'll run some monster hearts...because its always a TPK....") JACKERCON III "The Wierdest Seven Days in Gaming" TPK Goodness!

Really? Monster Hearts? I've only heard stories about it in Happy Jacks podcast.
Tomorrow is my first full party play with this group so I'll have a story to post and I'll have a better grasp on how online participation works out.
The biggest issue with joining Jackercon is the usual life stuff. My wife and I work some crazy hours so it's only on the weekends that we can actually spend time together and she feels ignored if I game all day. I'd be interested in seeing a Jackercon actual play to compare it with what I'm getting into tomorrow.
