For those who don't know the situation. I've been invited to play a D&D 2E game with a group via Skype. I'm the only person playing by Skype. There's been a number of warning signs that this might be a munchin game. You can read up from my previous posts if you want the back story: happyjacks.proboards.com/thread/3008/tips-on-playing-thiefhappyjacks.proboards.com/thread/2980/dual-class-multiSo, today is the day. Some people were out sick today so it's just my thief, a fighter, and a mage. Right off the bat, we were doing the "You meet a stranger in the dungeon" role play where the fighter makes a joke about the mage. The mage casts sleep on the fighter and then grease on the room followed by a "Respect my autho-rah-ta" speech. First combat, I step up to protect the mage, much to the party's bewilderment. I'm dual wielding so I get 2 attacks and I'm wearing no armor because it ruins thief abilities but I've got an 18 in DEX so my AC is 6. The mage moaned that she had a -1 AC so she should be in front plus she gets 3 attacks each turn. Turns out that she's stocked up on Martial Arts from the Ninja book since the DM not only allows but encourages that Non-Weapon Proficiencies be used for Weapon Proficiencies.

Ugh... second combat of the day... The 3 of us go up against what I suspect were 3 fighters. The first one crits and KOs the fighter, the second one hits me for 20 damage (non-critical) which puts me to -9 HP, and there's only the wizard left. Let's see what happens? TPK?

The wizard is the DM's wife so after dominating us, the bad guys backed off, took all of our money, and walked away.

Oh... and now we're being lectured about attacking without knowing the level of the monsters by the DM. The DM is explaining to us the correct way to deal with NPCs. He's blaming it on me for circling the bad guys but they didn't attack us until the wizard's faerie dragon familiar used its breath weapon... but it's not the wizard's fault.
The DM told us that he uses dead player characters for NPCs and told us that we were up against multi-class characters with a minimum level of 7, the highest in our party is level 3...
I've been out of the RPG scene for around a decade but I don't remember this being how things go.

Also, I totally wish I could play this game to kill the DM's wife for being not only a munchkin, but the ultimate chick munchkin stereotype. Wizard with a fairy dragon? Ugh! Are you going to continie playing? Honestly, this game doesn't even sound fun.

My wife settled that for me. At this point in the story she came into the room angry about something so I had to disconnect. In a way she rescued me.
I think the DM was showing off the awesome characters that he can make for that encounter. The armor less half-orc barbarian dual wielding bastard swords, an elf dual wielding long swords wearing banded mail, and... I've already forgotten what weapon the human fighter but he was wearing chain mail.

I got the impression that the guy playing the fighter in the party was a cool dude. I think that him and I would get along.

Dude...you should record this and then share the link here. I love that your posts are going up in almost real gaming time. I can FEEL the annoyance almost like I'm there!

Throwing very powerful "former PC's" at players is a dick move. I will wager my left testicle (it hangs too low anyway) that they are HIS former PC's, or PC's he wishes he could play. I'll believe his story if other players in the group verify that they played those characters previously

I didn't make it back to the game after my wife interrupted us but I got an update later. I got 2,000 xp as my cut and my character recovered from my -9 hp problem. Others weren't so lucky. The guy who was sick didn't get any xp as punishment and the guy who forgot it was happening today, his character is dead and added to the reuse NPC stack so he'll have to reroll his character.
The xp came with a warning, though. The DM won't rescue our characters from mistakes any more and the "kid gloves are coming off" for next session.
Did I mention that we had to roll initiative to see what order that we would search an empty room for secret doors?

Oh, since I'll never get to use this in game, I thought I'd mention the background I made up for my character. I started by asking what gaps the party has in regard for classes so I would be useful to the party. They suggested that they didn't "really have a thief" because I learned later that they have almost exclusively multi-class characters covering all the classes. I suggested that I could make a thief and asked if there were any problems with that, to which they told me that everything would be fine if I didn't steal from the party. Who does that to their companions? Anyway, I went to work.
I started with the Complete Thief's book. I went through the kits and picked the Swashbuckler, thief skills but not such a bad kind of guy. I liked the idea of a rich boy playing at being an adventurer so I made him the 3rd son of a minor noble who's fallen out of favor with the crown due to the family's ideas about the improved quality of life for their peasants. Being out of favor had brought financial hardship on the family so my character decided to set out in search of glory and gold for the family (that's it in a nutshell, my original copy was ridiculous at about 5 pages). The skills come from a life of indulgence: lock picking from breaking into liquor cabinets, move silently and hide in shadows from sneaking out for late night trysts, find and remove traps as a combination of loving adventure stories and lessons on engineering, and other thieves' cant and other skills from spending time in unsavory ale houses.
Ultimately I was pretty satisfied with myself. It's just a bit disappointing that I'll never get to use it.

Did I mention that we had to roll initiative to see what order that we would search an empty room for secret doors? I've known GMs who do this to help control the flow of actions, and keep people from stepping all over each other. When done well, it works beautifully.

Something tell's me few things in this game were done "beautifully" . But as always being the broken mp3 file that I am (no one remembers what records are...) I will repeat that you Boatmonger should come take part in Jackercon! I guarantee that you will find other gamers for online games that actually in fact play some lovely games. We are getting close to +100 people in the Jackercon community page on G+. They may be douchebags all...but you should still have fun.
