Here's an example of some tracks I used recently in a Dungeon World game: Yes, really into the Walking with the Beasts soundtrack. You can use this website to turn a Youtube into an mp3: www.youtube-mp3.org, although I personally used RealPlayer to download the "movie" and then free covnersion to mp3. I would've bought them, but I don't see where you can buy this soundtrack except in physical CD form off of eBay for $80. Faust and Shortee have some awesome Scifi tracks too... I especially like Hyperspace (#4) which I think would work for a good intro movie track. DVA is an Australian band (not to be confused with the Czech band), and they have some great tracks that have a somewhat middle eastern type sound, african percussions: linseypollak.com/wordpress/current-projects/dva-with-tunji-beier (has some sample tracks; Soursop is a favorite)

For background ambiance I've found DMDJ, suggested by another forum user many posts ago, very very useful. Especially with the special effects which can be added as required and on the fly - very good for 'creeping players out' with a well times distant roar or drums etc. Aaron Sent from my Surface 2 using Tapatalk

My experience is that music is too distracting or cheesy to intensify the mood. It's probably the groups I have played with, but it hurts immersion.
Plus it's one more thing I need to prep. Ugh.

I agree that cheesiness can be a major detriment. I'm still playing with many of these, and getting feedback from the players to see how they are working. As far as prep though, I find that having the tracks ready replaces some of the prep for me... it gives me an outline for the mood of the game, or general directions I think things will go (a reminder of some major checkpoints they're likely to hit along the way). It also pumps me up sometimes right before the game.

For background ambiance I've found DMDJ, suggested by another forum user many posts ago, very very useful. Hey Kainguru, do you know if DMDJ allows you to use your own tracks as well (for background etc) - like playing a background track off of your iphone's playlist - or is it just limited to their in-app tracks? I tried looking on the website but didn't see mention either way. EDIT: From looking at a comment or two in iTunes, it looks like this is either difficult or impossible (?) Also lots of people complaining that music turns off when screen locks or app in background, and can't turn off environmental effects (e.g. rain) without restarting the music, which is bulky, or by switching environmental effect (but no ability to just turn it off).

I'd like to take a moment and just say how much I'm enjoying these malifer, Houndin, tomes, Kainguru, SirGuido, heavymetaljess! You are all quite entertaining and informative. I love that I am already establishing "host archetypes" in my head. Malifer hates prep. Houndin sounds like a sage. Tomes is the current "hippy gamer" with his creative music ideas. Aaron is the delightful foreign curmudgeon. Fabian reminds us americans you don't have to shout to be heard. Sir Guido the voice of the gaming heartland. Jess is the voice of reason, and metal. Now I am scurrying to get this stuff a media server, get the itunes submission together, and convene more with Master Stu about this going up on Angry Folk. The world needs to hear this! Its such a great extension of the Happy Jacks podcast. Sound quality was again rather good everyone was clear and no lag. You know what you need to do now oh "He Who Loatheth the Prep..." SHOWNOTES. And so do I... What a bunch of articulate douchebags...Keep it up! Thanks for keeping math out of the picture...fuckin' math.

Houndin sounds like a sage. I feel I have failed the universe some how. But I don't want to, I just see the merits and flaws. The Nays win out. You know what you need to do now oh "He Who Loatheth the Prep..." SHOWNOTES. And so do I... I thought this was a Happy Jacks fancast. In honor of Stu Venable I will start doing shownotes when I hit season 9.

I wouldn't mind doing show notes for shows I'm on. Just tell me a format and I'll stick with it. Also, on the point of music, here is the playlist (I can't figure out how embed a playlist) that generally runs in the background of our Moorish game. I keep it really low most of the time and try to remind myself to make notes on certain tracks about reaction and mood or scene ideas. I do pause this and throw in occasional things specific to a scene such a Werewolf Forest from Plate Mail Games (I really like their tracks and have a bunch) or something I've put together over on Nature Soundmixer. I like that Realm Works lets me put the file or link directly into the information for that scene so I remember to play it.

heavymetaljess: Oooh yes! That first track (sahra saidi) I've already purchased... that's what I'd personally refer to as combat music. It's not about sounds of swords or monsters, it's just about that faster cadence and subconscious (or in this case: in your face) adrenaline push. Awesome! And now I know about youtube playlists... will update later.
