The vibe I am getting is that if I just make up my own sub sector the fact that me and my players have no clue outside of the core book any fluff won't hurt us.
Correct?

Never played Traveler, but you could always steal from other games if you are so inclined. 40K and Star Wars both have lots of concepts you could use, and with some good skinning no one will tell the difference.

Travellermap.com! Pick one subsystem, make up stuff, should your players ever leave it, you already have the map and just need to make up more stuff. Plus, it's an insanely cool prop if you just put one of your screens next to the table or tablets on the table with the map loaded. Did that a few months ago for a short Traveller game and it was really cool.

Agreed to travellermap. I picked a fairly obscure subsector and used the canon as a base. I let that guide my ideas... How would this water world have high population? Made that up: arcologies. As they built newer ones, the wealthy moved to them and the old one decayed. Lather rinse repeat, and you have a whole planet of varied settings from abandoned wreck to the nicest digs. A couple paragraphs of canon does not box you in, it forces you to be creative in a framework. And anyway I warned my players that nothing written anywhere would supersede what I explained, so I don't have any restrictions. It helps that my sector is a bit obscure and out of the way... The perfect place for a jump 1 ship of misfits to make a difference
