Ooooooh! I love me some starter sets! I'm running four D&D starter set 5e games in the next few months for the youths at the local library.
Traveller will be a great follow up.

These people are fucking high. Goal €100,000 (in non-Monopoly money that's a $130,000 for us Yanks) If you actually want the Box Set it is the €50 level pledge. $65 for a cardboard box three booklets, a map, and some deck plans. How in the hell is $65 the damn starter game?! I can get 2 or 3 Mongoose Core books for that. Are you a PDF junkie you can save 10 Euros and pledge €40. Good Grief. The company, 13Mann, play tested this and seemed to know what they were doing, but no one thought of working on bringing the price down. This was how they talked about it when announced. "TRAVELLER: LIFTOFF is a starter set for the Traveller RPG made for young players and designed around a "plug-and-play" mentality that lets you start playing immediately. Just grab a few friends, generate your characters, and LIFTOFF!" "LIFTOFF is made for the "next generation" of Traveller players – and hence the perfect gift any Traveller parent can give to his or her kids." That's bananas. How high are these people? They put forth stretch goals for every 25,000 Euros above the goal, from 125,000 to 275,000. If you are still excited yes I'm looking at you D.T. Pints "Mr.I-Like-Everything". Well after almost a week they've gathered 33 backers and are about 98,000 Euros short. Well at least if you are interested you can still download the playtest documents here.

No, I will actually utilize one of my five dislikes for the year for this one. I like the idea but I think they are in need of an editor. Starter sets should be just that a chance to get 'started' with a game system. The best so far has to be the Pathfinder Beginner Box. 30 bucks; tokens, dice, battlemat, books, character sheets lots of shiny things to get the youths interested in the game. Edge of the Empire has a big millennium falcon map, dice no one can read(thats for you malifer) I happen to like them , character sheets 25$... But I also know parents right here in good ol' Homer that buy there kids 200$ patagonia coats that they will grow out of in about six months. Some people have it to burn...

I got a lot of love for the starter set in general. But make it worth it. Why not just get the Core Book instead? Pathfinder's is so good I picked up a copy, which I have never used. If I was interested in weird dice games I think the Star Wars one is good, because you get the weird dice you would need if you got the core book instead. I think the 5th Edition D&D one is lackluster, but it's $12 so that is okay.

I'm not one who studies the trends in kickstarters, etc. but it's not looking good for this one, is it. I'm not going to go for it because it is too much.

The company running the campaign responded to the many comments I assume it's getting about it's goal and price.
13Mann Verlag
The initial high costs results from the fact that this we wanted to print a box and not just a pdf. Young players, esp. if you haven’t played RPGs before won’t get in contact with a pdf. And printing boxes is quite pricy, so you need a minimum amount to produce. And that amount requires shipping. When you add up the numbers you come up with this. Chances for a pdf-only are slim at the moment. Not anytime soon.
I believe he is right that box sets are expensive, but I'm not sure who all these other companies (sure some are bigger) are able to put together a box set that has a lot more board game-y stuff and keep it under $30. This one has none of that and is over $60.
Granted I have heard Pathfinder doesn't make much, if anything, off it's box set, but I kind of thought that was the point. "The first one's free..."
