Hello folks.
here's the situation:
A friend of mine's 15 year old daughter who loves Black Buter (her favorite), Attack on Titan, Blue Exorcist, and Tokyo Ghoul, told me she is "making up anime stories" with her friends. After asking a few questions about the stories, I found out that she and her friends were playing an RPG without even knowing it.
Now is the time, friends. Time to bring another into the fold. . . . . .there's only one problem: I don't play Anime based RPGs. . . . I don't even watch that much Anime.
HELP! What systems would be best? Not only does it need to replicate Anime well, but it also needs to be ideal for beginners.

In my opinion, BESM is the best anime system, but it's probably way to old school crunchy (if you hid much of the chart and table crunch it could be ok), but I think Wild Talents would be perfect (although I've never run, just read the system) - it's flexible enough for just about any type of anime character you'd need and simple enough to teach in a few minutes.

In addition to BESM I've heard good things about OVA, not played it but believe the system is relatively lightweight and they brought out a new edition in the last year or so.

I have been running an OVA:Revised(the new edition) game for awhile now and it's an amazing system for anime inspired things. The system is pretty much general universe and impressively light weight.

Now I'm curious about OVA. 15 dollar pdf at RPGnow. Skimming it now. Looks pretty streamlined and slick.

Was it OVA with the OGL or just the ROVA. I played an MMO of OVA that played like BESM. And a GURPS MMORPG like AD&D and a HERO SWTOR game that wasnt OGL but played like d20. But a GURPS MMORPG that's D20, but played like NWOD/HERO, And is OGL Is BS, CUZ ICONS MM WT SW BRP and O.R.E. was like BDSM for a 195+IQ
I have no Idea what you guys are talking about........

I have OVA (I think) and have started skimming it. I haven't gotten far enough to have an opinion yet.
Honestly though, what"s wrong with Fate of Fate Accelerated Edition? They're not specifically anime systems, but they could be.

I only read the character creation section Of OVA, but i would say use OVA instead of BESM. It looks like a much easier system. OVA reminded me a lot of Fate Exalerated Edition, but without fancy things like Aspects. OVA seems like a more "traditional" rpg system compared to FAE, but you could use FAE as well i guess.
And should this work out for you and your friends, you might want to check out Golden Sky Stories and/or Tenra Bansho Zero later on.

They're not specifically anime systems, but they could be. I found the meta-game part of fate can be distracting to new players that don't want to manipulate a scene strategically, they just want to play a character. Or, I've also seen the meta-game assessment carryover into new systems when players learned on fate and they end up with bad habits to break. Not in all cases, but in my experience that's what I've seen.

This is so fucking helpful y'all. Especially stork's reply. That was key. I'm probably going to go with OVA, as it's the most recent, Anime centric RPG. Thank you so much, as I seriously couldn't have done this without your input. Now, sacrifice your fudge dice to your Gygax altars, and pray that we bring another into the fold.

jfever: Any news so far? I read a bit more of OVA and have to say, it´s not as easy "pick up & play" as i first thought it would be. But it still looks interesting.

Late coming to the party here, but BESM is good. At least the first 2 editions were; I have the PDF of the third edition but I haven't actually read it yet. There was a Fudge game - HeartQuest - which was specifically for anime (shoujo anime, actually) but it had a lot of expansions to cover more generic anime.
I've also heard OVA is good, but I've never played it.
