I did the same thing recently so I could run my first ever GURPS game. I read it twice, and then went over it again with the intent of highlighting just the vital info. I ended up high lighting the entire 32 page document, because they had already boiled it down to the vital info. When I bought the basic set book I had a solid foundation to build upon. It was the easiest system I have ever picked up because of this approach. My players all seem to be enjoying the system a lot, and picking it up quickly. None of us had ever played GURPS before, but I think it may be my system of choice now. (And it was all because of Stu.)

GURPS Lite is fantastic and a wonderful learning tool. I think as a gateway it also sets the GM up for the modular-ness of the system. The transition from Lite to Basic is just sticking Basic meat onto the Lite skeleton. From there you just keep plugging in what you need and leaving out what you don't as you craft the game system you need.
They talk a lot on the show about how gritty, realistic and deadly GURPS is, but that's just the default mode. There's more than enough switches and dials that with the right books an experienced GURPS GM can easily make a cinematic or very forgiving experience out of it. Just like there's switches and dials to make it even more deadly and realistic.
This does require a decent understanding of the core mechanics, which, again, is why Lite as an illustration of GURPS as a stripped down machine is a great tool. Plug new rules into Lite and run a combat, see how it changes things. Try and break Lite to see the places where Basic fills the holes.
I find play testing is an integral part of GURPS Gming.

I actually printed out copies of GURPS Lite, and got folders for them. So I could give each of my players one. I had half as many questions as I would have had otherwise. For the first couple of sessions I don't think I even used any crunch that wasn't covered in Lite, it was plenty to get the game started. I just focused on trying to touch on a little bit of everything covered in Lite in those sessions, then like HourEleven said just kept building upon that skeleton of a system.

I'd say as far as systems go, GURPS is one of the easiest to learn.
It's the unified mechanic. Doesn't matter what you are doing, it's 3d6 plus modifiers.

The simplest way? Easy, play in a game run by either Stu or Mook. Take your pick the result will be flavored differently but ultimately be the same in terms of enjoying and knowing the system.

Speaking of, the " New to GURPS" series has just finished up the first eight posts, the "basic" intro. Time to add in more... STUFF!
