I tried obsidian portal for awhile but found it more limiting, more needlessly complex, and more expensive (if your ascendant or whatever) than just installing Wordpress on a sub domain of the website I already have for work. Obsidian Portal really needs a WYSIWYG interface.

Obsidian Portal really needs a WYSIWYG interface. Maybe it's just my memory fading with my advanced age, but I think pre-reforge it actually had one.

I use a moleskine that I made a leather cover/pen and stuff holder for. Recently made one for my daughter with her name tooled into the front, and now I'm just waiting on the boy to come up with a pattern or something to put on the front of his. While not exactly being discussed here, I just stumbled across this method for organizing/locating sections or topics in paper notebooks, and I think it's pretty awesome. (Like most things of this nature, I did also think... "Well, duh, that should be easy and work well.") notebook hack

I kickstarter this thing, which is now purchaseable: www.letterforms.org/It's a dry-erase notebook that is full of white-boards. I add this here because you mentioned manual notebooks up front. DUDE. Mine just came this morning, this thing is freakin' awesome. Thanks for the lead! Ah, dry-erase boards. Alas, these are the most accursed bane of the left-handed writer.

Stenopad. I want to love the OneNote, but I feel that if I have my laptop out, everyone else will bring theirs.

I use graph paper composition notebooks. They're cheap, readily available, and you can write and draw maps. The office supply stores frequently have them on sale for 99 cents each. I can use a separate one for each topic I'm working on. They fit easily into a bag, and are fairly durable. I think Kimi will agree, better gaming through judicious use of office supplies. It's the way to go. :-)

I just started getting into bookbinding and make my own notebooks. I made these for my game group as their "Hunter Journals" in Supernatural. The awesome part of making your own is you can stitch bind them, soft cover them, hard cover them, make them as big or as small as you want, and with whatever paper inside that you want. All of these are half-sheet size.
