vampire the Masquerade Fourth Edition. Not sure how I feel about this, but I'm sure battle lines are being drawn as we speak.

Any links?
I haven't heard anything about it and am a little confused. Didn't they just reboot the V20 line not all that long ago?

No links handy, but here's the skinny... V20 was largely a "nostalgia" product that didn't really revise any rules, it was more of a compilation of what had come before. As far as edition-ness and its place in the timeline, it's still Vampire: The Masquerade Revised, with some extremely minor tweaks. As "agnostic" supplements, the V20 stuff is theoretically compatible with any of the stuff that came before, and may be as well with VtM4e VtM 4e is presumably going to have rules revisions (a lot of people are calling for wholesale revisions to the core dice mechanic, which I doubt will happen). The metaplot will be advanced to the current day - which is over a decade past what was essentially the end of the world in Vampire lore ("Gehenna"). What this means for the social structure of the Kindred, I dunno. Edit 1: Here's the rpg.net link, with input from Onyx Path folks sprinkled throughout. Edit 2: The "Reboot" is the New World Of Darkness, and in particular Vampire: The Requiem (and its newest version, Blood and Smoke). The whole nWOD line is a totally seperate game line from the Old World of Darkness lines (Vampire the Masquerade et al). It's confusing as all hell, especially now with Onyx Path actively publishing for both game lines. It was easier when the Old WOD was DOA.

Do you think the rule system will be available stand alone? Like a generic system? That would interest me.

Probably not. There's no exact baseline for the Old WOD rules (the "Storyteller System"), each gameline tweaked the ruleset in its own ways. The New WOD book, "World of Darkness," is its baseline rules (the "Storytelling System")- as close to a generic ruleset you'll get. In New WOD, what you would do originally is get the blue World of Darkness book, and then the addon book for whatever game you wanted to play (like Vampire: The Requiem) - an annoyance Stu Venable alludes to in the 15-06 podcast. I'm just glad I can _sort of_ navigate the differences between the gamelines without a chart nowadays. Back when I started getting interested in doing World of Darkness again and didn't know they'd killed off the Old WOD games and started new ones with ALMOST the same names? Aaaagh.

I was at the announcement for V:tM4, and it seemed since the V20 was more of a compilation instead of the rules tweaks that the other 20ths got, they wanted to update the rules. They really wanted to make it clear that in their minds OWoD and NWoD are different games. I guess we'll see what it looks like at release.

So, basically there was Vampire: the Masquerade (V:tM), then there was V:tM second edition, then there was V:tM revised edition, then they ended the line and replaced it with Vampire: the Requiem. Then they released V:tM 20th Anniversary Edition (V20), which cleaned up the V:tM revised edition (after so many editions it was kind-of a mess, rules-wise) and made it meta-plot agnostic.
Then they released V:tR second edition (which is sometimes called Blood and Smoke or something).
Now they've announced V:tM fourth edition.
Personally I'm enthused; obviously V20 sold enough and had enough fans to warrant a V:tM 4E. As to what V:tM 4E will entail, well, no one knows anything about that. Onyx Path has said that they're going to release more details after they get back from GenCon and have some time to decompress.
For me the bottom line is that V:tM 4E will be a good thing, but it's going to take a long time to come to fruition. In the meantime, I'm super happy with V20 so I'm going to playing and running it, while keeping my ear out for V:tM 4E news.

Personally, I think they should fix the core book for NWoD first. Unless they plan on abandoning NWoD altogether.
I JUST bought a PoD version of V20 -- so of course they announce a new edition.

I kind of like the post-Gehenna, modern days metaplot developed by By Night for Mind's Eye. I wish I could find a summary right now, though...

GehennaThey're talking about Gehenna over on the official Vampire development page.

So... Gehenna happened, but something changed it midway through and the Kindred came out... well, not unscathed - certainly scathed and different - but, for the most part, largely OK. I'm interested. Edit: for what it's worth? I thought the Week of Nightmares was stupid.
