Why do we not have a thread about this yet? (I must be getting old or something.) It looks like we've finally found a convention location we're happy with, because XenoCon will finally be held in the same place as last year! This year's Guest of Honor will be Merle M. Rasmussen, old-school game designer and creator of TSR's Top Secret™ RPG. Who else is going, and what games are you running?

I'm running:
* Grindhouse 4: Heavy Grinding - There's gonna be a super-secret new twist this year. I'm really looking forward to mixing things up just a bit.
* Walt's Angels 3: The Mouse Strikes Back - the big finale to my Walt's Angels trilogy. MousekEmperor Mickey must fall. Bring in the Jedi Ex-Princesses.
* Terror in Paradise - I'm bringing back my Dread RPG scenario again, simply because it was so much fun and setup is literally just printing off a new set of character sheets.
* Fuzzy Heroes - Back by popular demand, the stuffed-animals-vs-action-figures war game is returning. New bad guys! New scenarios! And if it arrives in time, there'll even be a prize giveaway!
Yep, I'm running games in Every. Damn. Slot. 'Cuz why the fuck not?

It really pains me to say this, but if you're an out-of-towner thinking of attending XenoCon, I'm going to have to recommend that you pass on it this time. It's not going to be worth the trip. I've just learned that all registered events are now on the website. Of the 24 registered events listed, muntjack and I are running seven of them. He and I also responsible for all but one of the six available RPG events. I am phenomenally disappointed.

Hey, we did our part. I'm running games in all five time slots, and he's running RPGs in three out of five. Last year we had 61 events spanning the three-day weekend; this year there are only 24.
Having been a staunch supporter since day one, I have to say it's due to piss-poor management. Dammit.
After this, I really don't expect to see a Xenocon 5.

I hope you'll be at the same location next year. It's a short walk to my parent's house from there. They even had their 50th wedding anniversary party there. But I have to save my PTO at work and I need to talk the previous Friday off to have the furnace fixed before it gets too cold.

Yep organizing cons is often a very thankless job...until you get to look onto a sea of people playing games. This looks like a job for plusx2a. That bastard sounds like he's really helping create a monster with Gateway and etc...and by job I mean give some advice. Con Death is a terrible, terrible thing.

I know what you mean Pints. I was the webmaster for a sci-fi con for three years. The biggest problem was egos followed by procrastination. The con was ultimately torn apart by the egos, people weren't communicating and were doing what they thought was best for their interests instead of what was best for the con's. As webmaster I saw it as my duty to make every department's webpage so awesome people could point to any of them and say "THAT is why I'm going". This is the procrastination comes in. People have lives and sometimes they get busy and forget or put it off. Some departments were great in getting me content for their web page, some weren't. In the end the ones that weren't were jealous of those that did. It didn't help the department I liked was also the one who worked with me the most in improving their webpage. No one said it, but I think some thought I was playing favorites because it was easier than admitting they gave me nearly nothing to work with.
Working a con is a thankless job. We need to fix that.

Last year we had 61 events spanning the three-day weekend; this year there are only 24. A slight improvement - there are now 35 events. Still WAYY down, but at least there are now a few more RPGs listed. And alverant, even if this turns out to be the last Xenocon, I'm fairly certain it won't be the end of gaming conventions in the Quad Cities...

But the fact Xenocon is so close to where my parents live that it's easier to walk there than drive is a big appeal. I live in Chicagoland now and don't get much of a chance to go back to the QCA. Is Dragon's Sanctum in Moline still there? I remember a game shop near the Davenport Public library that was cool because it was in this old building that added atmosphere. There was also this model shop in Moline that had a summer of a Battletech games on Fridays. My pilot was killed in the last round of the last game I could attend due to a DFA.

The Sanctum is, sadly, a thing of the past. These days we have Games Plus One in Davenport, and it's a pretty sweet place. I miss playing Battletech. If I had more free time, that's totally a thing I'd love to do again.

Having been a staunch supporter since day one, I have to say it's due to piss-poor management. Dammit. I was only on the xenocon admin side for a year or so, and things have probably changed since then, but from what I witnessed, I 100% agree with this statement.
