Looking at the skins now. By God, what a lot of Goths!
Right, having looked through them all (though I really need to grok the game, I'm not sure the players hand out is telling me everything I need to know about gameplay) I'm inclined to follow my gut and go Selkie, if everybody is happy to go with a setting that makes that feasible.
Alternatively, the Witch calls to me.
I asked about gender because the majority of "landed" Selkies in stories are female (there are plenty of males but they stay in the sea. I see the skin makes it clear that you can play either sex, and I'm toying with mixing up the stories by playing a male, but tending towards going trad and being a girl.

I fully support the choices made thus far. Selkie and Serpentine are great.
I can wait til everyone has chosen before i make my choice, i have feelings towards some, but I've played this a few times.

Either way you want to play your Selkie is totally cool fredrix; going against type and playing a male selkie would be interesting, but playing a "traditional" female seklie might give you more cues about how your character would act. Which ever you want to do is fine with me. The Player Reference Sheet I shared should be a brief but complete rundown of all the mechanics of the game. There aren't that many to be honest. Just the seven Basic Moves, Strings, Forward, Conditions, Death, Healing, Darkest Self, Sex Moves, Gangs, Advancement, Rolling Dice, Seasons, Season Advances, and Growing Up moves. That seems like a fair bit when I type it out like that, but I feel the main things to look at are Rolling Dice, Basic Moves, and Strings. Those are the core of the game. Everything your character does will either just happen (or possibly trigger an MC move), or it will trigger a Basic Move or one of the moves on whatever Skin you pick. Think of Strings a bit like Fate points; you can use them to do things like buff your rolls and there is an economy that goes along with them. Taking Strings on a characters gives you power over them. You want to have Strings on other characters and don't really want them to have too many on your character. Conditions, Sex Moves, and Darkest Self are important too. Conditions are a little like Fate aspects, though are almost always negative. Sex Moves encourage and provide an incentive for characters to get it on with each other, creating drama and messy love triangles. Darkest Self is kind of like a little script you follow that encourages you to be a horrible, sometimes literal monster. Again, creating drama that pushes the game forward. gina, Forresst, and joecrak can add basics if they feel I've missed anything. I'm trying to keep it as a broad overview for right now though.

Yes, you can change your name. Let me get signed in to the game today, and I'll happily give you a hand with the setup and whatnot, HyveMynd. Yeah, RPOL isn't very visually appealing, but the functionality it gives you for PbP games is really good.

I have also requested to join the game. Once HyveMynd approves us, we'll be able to start posting and all that.

Righty-o. joecrak, Forresst, and Probie Tim have been approved and added as player to the game on RPoL.net. Thanks very much for the offer of help, Probie Tim. I feel like I'm slowly finding my way around RPoL.net, but things don't seem to be that intuitive.

Right, so we got a Serpentine, a possibly Selkie, and a Rusalka. Need any advice on things Probie Tim gina shadrack ? The Mortal is one of my favorite, because they are the best and the worst. They screw everything up, and it's awesome. The Queen is another fun one, based off the Queen Bee hive idea, or you could just be a normal teen that's the popular kid, or head of a clique. The Infernal is an allegory for addiction, always going back for one more hit, because of the power it gives you. The fae is a lot of fun especially when you keep finagling promises out of people. The Witch was the first one i ever play in a con game. Halfway through the session the other players said i could just steal stuff to use to cast spells. Then I made the werewolf get killed by his pack, and the Queen got brain damage from telling too many lies. All cause of me! Needless to say, Hex casting is fun, even when it goes wrong. The Chosen is my least favorite as well. Mostly because their presence usually changes the tone of the game completely.

Yeah. I'd prefer it if people didn't play The Chosen unless there is absolutely no other Skin that interests them. I too don't like how it shifts the focus of the game. I'm curious to see how The Fae would play in a PbP. My tactic when playing one is to be an annoying as fuck motormouth and then either trick people into promising me something, or make them promise me something just to shut the hell up.

So, I'm thinking about Setting. If I'm going to play Morgelyn, a Selkie, HyveMynd's advice is to set it somewhere coastal. I was thinking about Martha's Vineyard, or somewhere equally affluent. How does that fit with everyone's nascent character concepts?

Works for me. Usually in my games we just create the town that we play in, and say what notable features there are. Like, we totally have a forest right over here. And here's the train tracks, the the abandoned steel factory.

That sounds great fredrix. Though rather than setting the game in Martha's Vineyard, I'd prefer to set it in an imaginary town inspired by Martha's Vineyard. That allows us to change things as needed, just as joecrak is suggesting, without having to worry about authenticity.

I wasn't suggesting the ACTUAL Martha's Vineyard For a start I know nothing about it in real life. I didn't even know until I just looked it up that it was an actual island, with no road links. So, for example, we might want a place with a bridge...

Ah! Now you're talking. An affluent island town up in the northeast wieh like only a single bridge to the mainland sounds like loads of fun.

If you don't mind a little outside inspiration. Such a locale just screams Seaside B&B.... perhaps in association or even somewhat in competition with the afore mentioned tea house.
