With the recent mention on the podcast of Manowar and here on the fourm of Alestorm, I was thinking about all the other bad ass barely known metal bands that inspire me as a GM. So lets talk about bands that inspire games, characters, and stories and why.
I ran an entire Werewolf: The Apocalypse game based on Rob Zombie's "Hellbilly Deluxe" album with a pack that claimed just the highways in a VERY large area as their territory.
Finnish metal band, "Lordi". One my my favorite bands, the monsterous makeup and subject matter make great music for a less serious horror style game, for darker characters, or dark fantasy settings.
My three favorite goth, or gothish, bands "Bella Morte", "Cruxshadows" and "Type O Negative" all have some good stuff for horror games. The first two were actually featured of "The Succubus Club" Vampire: The Masquerade sound track. Could be used to inspire more serious horror or just goth characters. "Bella Morte" recently put out some heavier stuff that is more suited to an action kind of character.
Chick Bands, Pukka Tukka recently was talking about "Lacuna Coil", which is a symphonic metal band with a powerful female lead. My favorite of that crop is "Within Temptation", and honorable mentions to "Nightwish" (I prefer the earlier stuff with Tarja, to the newer Annette stuff), "Epica," "Warlock," "After Forever" and "Eyes of Eden." Again, being that european metal thing, they have a ton of horror and fantasy gaming potential. And with the operatic/symphonic elements running through most of those, they feel very epic and inspirational.
As a nice counter point, the male power metal bands are usually along the same subject matter, but with the more masculine tropes of driving guitars and dragons and demons and shit. "Helloween," "Evergrey," "Gamma Ray," and "Sabaton" are a few good examples. Also, I am gonna lump the british heavy metal stuff in here because I consider them the ancestors of this style of metal. "Black Sabbath," "Motorhead," and "Iron Maiden" are all very, very game inspirational and I doubt I need to explain why.
I could probably go on, but I don't want this to be all me so... your turn.

I haven't got specific groups that inspire me as a GM, but music very regularly does inspire my games. I have created *several* campaigns that were inspired by individual songs, or in some cases, individual phrases of music.
The best one I can remember right now was the opening strains of a Moody Blues song, that put in my head a particular image, that became the basis for an entire Star Wars campaign, back in high school.

I have a stupidly big collection of music in many styles, genres and tones. And they really do provide me with a lot of the inspiration for my settings. Of course, the tone of the adventure itself gets more influence from my players than anything I can do, I mean, once I put the atmosphere in place, they can do what they want with it. I typically listen to a lot of industrial if I want a dark or gritty scene, straight up metal for horror, or on one memorable occasion I wrote a country and western one-shot. I was listening to.... take a wild guess. There was cowboys and robbers and everything.
Case in point: I had this awesome idea for a secret society in one of my game worlds, where every magic user had retreated from the outside world and built a very-well-fortified, self-sufficient enclave. My thought was steampunk: Brass everywhere, victorian fantasy sort of style to the buildings, and everyone talked kind of like the RAF Major voice they do on the podcast. Except the women of course. Their voices don't go that deep. Anyway, that was all inspired by some Goteki remixes, Abkey Park, and some fairly brassy classical I had on my ipod one day while I was thinking of the next place I was gonna dump my guys.
My party? Figured it was Hogwarts. Yep. They decided to play it up all Harry Potter style. I was kinda mad but in the end, whatever. Next time maybe I'll bust out the drawing tools.

Holy Christ, Tappy. You just posted probably the entire playlist for ALL THE CLUBS I frequented in my 20s in one shot. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Beborn Beton's Another World:
. And some of the slicker KMFDM:

well, to be fair, I heard most of these song in clubs that I visited in my 20's.
FUCK YEEEEESSSSSSSS I love "Another World", it fucking rocks!!!!
I like KMFDM, but I have been underwhelmed by them the couple times I have seen them Live. But yes, their better songs still kick some goddam ass!
I almost included "Panzermench" in the above list, then I didn't becasue I felt I had already gone too far...
but, since at least you will get the joke
I think what this means that its been too long since I went out to a club. I'm gonna have to hit Bunker after the podcast next friday.

You lucky SOB to have a club called Bunker that you can go to whenever you feel like it. I have to wait until next week for Hang the DJ. *sigh* screw living in a tiny city with a tiny tiny goth/industrial/whatever scene.
I'm surprised you got a crappy show out of KMFDM. Every time they've come up here they've rocked the house like there were guns to their heads. Man, the first time I saw them they played Son of a Gun live and by the end of it I had danced so hard my head was spinning.
That video's HILARIOUS. Sniper Rights. Emo Bear Rights! I almost feel like making a game where you're sent to strike break a bunch of snipers. My head makes me silly.

Ministry is my go to for Cyberpunk and visceral biotech writings, be it game writing, short stories or what have you. Its just the sound I hear the world having when I'm doing that kind of stuff.
If i'm doing a sort of Conan/Dark Sun thing, I like to listen to High on Fire

Ah ministry, another favorite! good shit!
I will see your Ministry and raise you Nitzer Ebb
When ever they say "JOIN IN THE CHANT!" I always hear them say "JUNK IN THE TRUNK!"
Speaking of misheard lyrics, imagine my chagrin when I found out that in The Sisters of Mercy's "Lucretia, My Reflection" they never ever say the word "Vampire".
I can't post a Sisters of Mercy song without including "This Corrosion" for completeness sake.

Forresst, I don't mean to brag (ok that's a lie, I do), but we actually have Perversion on Thursday, Das Bunker on Friday, Ruin and Bar Sinister on Saturdays (with Disko Nekro every third saturday), Malediction Society on Sundays, and Blue Mondays (and Wumpskate every 2nd monday) on Mondays. We did have a goth/industrial Karaoke called Ground Kontrol on mondays as well, but it just closed a few weeks ago.
Really there are only a couple dead (haha!) nights a week for goth/industrial music.
If you ever make it out to a convention in Los Angeles, let me know and we will hit some clubs!

Hey Azuretalon, the people who play "I'm gother than you" are generally just trying really hard to persuade you that they're just generally more awesome than you could ever be, so pffft. The Cruxshadows are really good! I went on the goth cruise once upon a time and they were playing it was AWESOME.
I never got too much into the more straight up metal, I like the industrial rhythms more I find. Except Rammstein, although I'm sure people would tell me I'm an idiot for liking Rammstein. But every once in a while I like to listen to some of the metal bands out there. Do you like Cradle of Filth? When I don't wanna dance I just wanna yell along with the stereo, that's who I put on.
Hey, if you like Orgy at all, I got this one song on my ipod by a band called Blue Stahli and I kinda like it! I just have no clue where it came from or how it got there. I haven't looked up any young priests or old priests though.

Oh yeah! And I had this idea inspired by your thread and the discussion. I think it might be cool to have a little game where people sign up, and everyone gives the person to their metaphorical left a song or two, and the person who receives the song builds a world or setting based on the song they get! That could be super fun!

In my DnD 4e game, we have a combat music playlist that runs throughout the game. Each player gets to add a song that best personifies their character. If their song comes up during the game, they get an action point that they must spend on their next turn.
I played a few different characters. Their songs were:
The Changling Bard: "We Will Rock You" Queen The Storm-soul Genasai Wizard: "Thunderstruck" ACDC The Dragonborn Warlord: The Theme song to The A-Team.
