I thought it was a given that the booked were a product of a collaborative effort? I'm sure the author has acknowledged his collaborator. At work so no time to look it up - I see if I can find the reference tonight. Aaron

Yeah it is a given and not hidden but if you don't read the about the author section it could be easy to miss. What it doesn't say is how it was written, whether each dealt with certain characters or whether they split it up / edited it in a different way.

This from Wikipedia:
" by James S. A. Corey, the pen name of authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. "
In my defence I just read the first few chapters.

Okay. So I'm about halfway through Leviathan Wakes.
I was getting frustrated that the shit from the prologue was not followed up on for twenty friggin four chapters. I was *really* frustrated with the Miller POV chapters, because he didn't seem to really be *doing* anything. Was really liking Holden.
Now, around Ch 30, I'm finding that's flipped. Miller has turned out to be a badass.
As far as the audio, I'm underwhelmed. I guess I'm spoiled by the James Marsters readings of Dresden Files... this guy sounds like he's just reading a book, with some verrrry slight tonal changes for character dialogue. Then again, this audio is from the Dark Ages, where audiobooks were a novelty rather than an actual market.
The setting is giving me food for thought about Traveller, kind of the same way the Motie books did. You don't really *need* a star drive for an expansive (ha) setting, a solar system is a big damn place already.

I just finished Calaban's War yesterday, and I'm loving the audiobooks so far. Avasarala is definitely a great character, with a lot more depth than one might initially think. sbloyd: yeah, the Miller arc is pretty neat. You start out just thinking he's a decent detective and he'll be part of the plotline in that regard, then he has the realization that he's not such hot shit, and he joins the plotline in a role of someone seeking redemption/proving oneself. And DEFINITELY Traveller food.

Finished Leviathan Wakes. If it weren't QUITE so high tech, I'd say Eclipse Phase might be a good fit for an RPG here. I certainly can see the stuff from The Expanse fitting right into a stock EP game.

I'm a fan of The Expanse; I started with Leviathan Wakes, watched the show, and am only on the 2nd book, but I know I'll read them all. I prefer the books as well. My introduction to Avasarala came in the TV show, and I despised her callous nature and casual dismissal of others. When I read the 2nd book, she's surprisingly nuanced, strong, funny, and deep. None of that came through in s1 of the show. They changed the guy reading it, and I can't stand him. The reader can really make a huge difference can't it? There are some where I can get used to the books, but I’m actually more likely to listen to a book with a reader I like than a book I want to read/listen too with a reader that I don’t care for. My wife quit a series because of the reader. I'm sure she'll read it when time permits, but who knows when that will be. Yeah, I've got a couple Audible purchases which I'll never listen to, because I didn't use the preview feature prior to purchase. Boo. In particular, PKD's Ubik is read by a guy who can't decide if he's doing an old time radio broadcast, or projecting for the rear of the theater.

I just hit the new reader, and I've stalled out. I don't think it's the change in narrator though; it's... The series feels like it should be more about Holden than it is, and I really begrudge some of the other POV characters.

Same thing has happened to me - though I just don't like the new readers style, at all. Strange pronunciations and an odd meter/inflection in the way he renders a sentence; he inserts periods and comma's where they don't seem to belong Aaron
