I'm thinking roll20 paired with a some streaming or recording software will be the go. If I can get a game prepped I will try this. I'm thinking: Roll20 - paired with Open Broadcast Studio Both if which are free and multi-platform. EDIT: Oh look, Roll20 wiki has an OBS guide (scroll down): wiki.roll20.net/Live_Stream_and_Record_Game_SessionsI've paired Roll20 with Discord for about a year and haven't had a single issue. I've even piped in audio affects through a virtual audio cable. The reason I like Discord is because it can operate through apps, not through browsers--so it's more stable. I also like having the option of using it from my phone in case wireless is an issue. One important point: I have no idea if Discord can be recorded. In other news Roll20 just upgraded their audio system, I haven't tried it yet but maybe it's more stable now.

One important point: I have no idea if Discord can be recorded. I'm not at home to run tests, but I'm sure you could run something in the background to capture everything passing thru your soundcard.

Do you use video too? That has broken the browser for me a few times that's why we use Discord separately. Of course we started in Roll20 pretty early on so maybe those issues are better now.

I would love to see Roll20 in action I've been surprised that Fantasy Grounds isn't using a video conferencing add on yet. However roll20 community page forum isn't very good but probably better than G+ these days. You haven't recorded or streamed your games maxinstuff?

I have used OBS to record much more intensive stuff than roll20 - so that definitely works. Streaming is built in but I haven't tested it as I only have 1 megabyte up some quick calculations tell me it might be doable though, not at 1080p 60fps, but 720p 30fps will probably be ok....

It's a purely artifical limit - and it's actually 3mb up now that I check I'm on cable I just don't pay the extra $30 a month for 100down/30up (I'm on 30down/3up).

It ain't much but its something... Thank you! This was really helpful. I just have one question--what if we're planning to run a game in Roll20? Can we still use this method? I see that the creation screen in YouTube says we can use Google Hangouts on Air, but does that include all the "plug-ins"? I ask because I'm trying to decide whether I can fit in my Death House game before Halloween, or whether I should allow myself more time to figure out the system. UPDATE: Okay, I tried posting! Let's see if this works.

I'm gonna try streaming it to youtube from OBS. If it works well, I will totally write up a guide (or maybe make a tutorial video) for next time.
When I have used hangouts it has been with the roll20 plugin, but since using the roll20 site directly I think I prefer that - for whatever reason I've had less audio issues and just a higher quality experience overall. There has been some overlap there with users/players too so I don't think it's just coincidence.
My guess is it's because with hangouts you have that additional layer running. Roll20 is a bit nicer outside of the hangouts "wrapper" IMO.
I'll share the stream to the jackercon community and post a link up in the forum post for the game too - should be just like any other hangouts stream as far as people watching are concerned.
