We must have voted to go back into the EU, closely followed by the referendum to change the National Anthem to the "Hokey Cokey

As ever, Stu's plot is nicely set up, not bombastic and stretching one's credulity, and then just let to run its course.
Question: how much radio contact do the generation ships have when they are en route? Do you know that they will have been over taken when they arrive at their destination? Are they able to keep their technology up to date (short of jump drive).
The rivalry between the various elements of a flotilla of generation ships forms part of the plot of Alastair Reynolds's Chasm City.

I think the closer ships (within a couple parsecs) have the ability to send and receive transmissions.
Some of the generation ships are going 8-10 parsecs away. I doubt they're in contact with Earth any more.

Ouch. So not only do the turn up to find their future's been stolen, but all their tech and knowledge is out of date too.

Yup. And they're not the ones that decided to make the sacrifice to live on a ship for generations.
