I'm hoping this is the right place to ask the good Jackers and Jackettes a question for the show.
My situation is this...I have a relatively good group of players. Most have played for years, we have one new person who is getting into it and we are able to meet fairly regularly. However, I have one murder hobo in my gaming group.
He is constantly attempting to monopolize the game and make all the important decisions. if the story is not focused on his character and his decisions, he gets bored. He constantly challenges me, the GM, on rules or just needles me about things he doesn't like in the story, or just wants to make fun of. Some of this is just joking around, but can still be really distracting. He is a constant min-maxer, trying to get every possible bonus he can and argues anytime he doesn't get his way. He'll try to loot all the treasure after every encounter without giving other players a chance and then argue about it if I or any of the players challenge him. He will have his character threaten to attack anyone that doesn't go along with him, though he doesn't actually follow through with it, unless its an NPC he doesn't like. He is impatient for the game to move along, only wanting to spend 2 hours a session, yet spends the most time causing the game to get off track with, cracking jokes, getting up to get a drink, walk around or do other things instead of staying focused on the game. His behavior has gotten worse over the past few sessions and it gets work the more liquor he imbibes.
The main issue with this particular problem player slash murder hobo is that...he's my brother! We have played since we were kids and over the past year, I have started GMing games again. My brother came back to gaming with me but has become more and more problematic as time has progressed. It was always a bit of an annoyance but its getting worse and has started to become a real problem.
How do I get him to reform his gaming behavior without damaging our relationship? He doesn't take criticism well. If he were just some joe blow person from down the street, I would just ban him from the game. Since its my brother, things are a bit more complex.
