Hollywood is currently running a classic movie festival and I went to see Casablanca with my wife. That movie really holds up!
One of the best things about it is all the ancillary characters in the film. The heart-on-his-sleeve bartender, the pickpocket warning everyone about pickpockets, the chief of police accusing a bar of illegal gambling while taking his cut of the gambling operation's earnings.
Which movies, books, comics, TV shows...inspire your NPCs' personalities?

Almost every show I watch does that. Currently Missing, Touch, Unforgettable, Person of Interest, and Fairly Legal have great characters in them.

Bruce Willis movies. I <3 him. Also, Tank Girl. And almost any given show or movie or comic book I read or watch will give me something to chew on!

A wizard NPC in the game I'm currently running is based on Jolee Bindo of the first Knights of the Old Republic game.

I'm about to start playing a character based a little on the Agent from Serenity. I truly like the idea of a man who is willing to damn his soul to make a better world for everyone; willing to do all the wrong things, for what he thinks is all the right reasons.
"I'm not going to live there. There's no place for me there... any more than there is for you. Malcolm... I'm a monster. What I do is evil. I have no illusions about it, but it must be done. "

i like to use information brokers in the form of a wizened older gentleman, or immaterial beings of higher knowledge.....so i guess you can say i draw that kind of inspiration from obi-wan kenobi from the original star wars trilogy....i also like using the kinds of npc's with some form of influence in their areas, but have a shady side to them not unlike john marcone....i've also done inspiration from various anime's, and tv shows, one most noteable was a npc modeled around the main character from burn notice

Most of my shopkeepers are based on those in Monty Python.

Most of my shopkeepers are based on those in Monty Python. "Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony. Oh and would you like a scabbard for that sword?"

Just about every movie or tv show I watch. Just about every NPC I run is some "clone" of someone I saw in a movie, TV show, or book I read. It just makes it easier to get into the Character quickly. When I'm a player I find I don't do that as much, preferring to make something more my own. I usually do this with the big bads as well. But all the extras floating around, are almost always a straight clone that I can fall into easily.

NPC's in my games tend to be fairly archetypal and are almost always based on someone I've seen in a movie or book or similar though they may be in a totally different context than they appeared when I saw them.
Cheers,

In my current Pathfinder campaign so far the players have run into NPC's based on:
The Tick Dread Pirate Roberts Inigo Montoya Fezzik an old-timey announcer type guy - based on Roosterteeth's Burnie Burns impersonation of an old-timey announcer guy
Depending on what direction they go tomorrow night there's a chance they might run in to: Zapp Brannigan and Kif Kroker
