A year or so ago I read Scott Lynch's Lies of Locke Lamora and was completely captured by it. It's a fantastic meshing of several of my favorite things: fantasy without being "high fantasy," heist or caper novel, and a fair amount of humor throughout it. I was hooked from start to finish.
I'm reading through Red Seas Under Red Skies now and, though enjoyable, it's not hitting the same notes for me.
There's nonsequential storytelling: check. Humor: check. And I can tell there's a helluva heist coming. But...
As much as I liked Locke having to think on his feet, I also enjoyed how he seemed several moves ahead of his marks in the first novel. In this one, he seems to be extemporizing and (god forbid) humanly fallible. Sure, we saw his mistakes and their results in Lies, but this book feels like I'm living through Robin Hobb levels of sadism toward the protagonist with no small payoffs in the interim.
Is anyone else into this series? Do you feel the writing improves or declines over the current three books? Or do they simply differ?
PS: I hope this is the "off-topic" or non-games or not-necessarily-games forum for Happyjacks... It seems like yes, but there's surprisingly little non-games content here.
PPS: Drink.

I have no idea as I haven't read any of it, but now I want to read Lies of Locke Lamora. (On kindle for only $1.99!)

It's pretty fabulous, and the nonlinear storytelling works very well to add to both the tension and relieve humor. Definitely one of my favorite fantasy novels now. The sequel, Red Seas Under Red Skies, is good on its own, but not as-good as the original. A few things were more predictable than the first book, but still a good caper; well: a set of capers.

I almost started reading lies this morning, but instead choose the 9th Malazan book. I'm going to start after I finish this series.

It never dumbed things down, IIRC i spent mucho time trying to figure out the various characters and even characters within characters.

The world-building, the characters, races, the magic/god system. It is amazing what the author and his resources was able to accomplish. Not to mention how big these books are and the frequency that he delivers them is mind blowing. He wrote 17 books in 13 years. I'm still waiting for Rothfus to put out his 3rd Kvothe book, and he's going on 4 years on it...
