When you play or run a con game do you feel that hand drawn maps detract from the experience? I'm torn between purchasing a pre-made map pack which may not be exactly right and hand drawing my maps on my wet erase game mats.

I prefer maps drawn on the spot.
They are often in a better scale and if the person drawing explain what he draw you get a better understanding of the layout.

If you're having trouble thinking "What would a restaurant have, and how would it be laid out?" or "I know where the vaults are, but where would the bank have its restrooms?" then I can see wanting pre-printed maps.
Otherwise, hand drawn maps are where it's at.

Hand-drawn for scenes and combats, and a decent premade map for the setting when appropriate. I prefer whiteboard stuff for our home games, but I'd probably print them out for a con. I hope this was as completely not helpful as it feels.

I had some good results from throwing some wet erase markers on the yard by hard hex map and telling the players to draw the map. I provided some rough parameters and let them have at it. (A couple buildings, a small simple rustic grave yard with that classic sad looking tree...) It gave the players some agency while also giving me a minute or two break for whatever that they otherwise would have been waiting on me for. This wouldn't work in a lot of situations where you have something specific planned, but for something where you're more winging it, I loved it. Whatever floats your boat.
