Guys, I have a trouble. Ever since I got into this forum, I've been so happy, see, I got into a sweet Traveller Googly Plus game, I've been playing some Savage Worlds on Skype, and things have been awesome. So very very awesome. But I miss Rifts. It was my first game ever. And as much fun as blowing myself up to stop scary paint knights in Weird Wars is, or as cool as playing psychotic "got your nose!" interrogations in Traveller is... I really REALLY want to have a little romp where I can be an alien mechanical engineering genius, or a bitchy princess ninja girl... or something. I know it's a terrible system. I know it's a bad thing and I should feel bad. But I got the itch, man. Help me make it go away

my last visits to the world of Rifts(aside from reading the books, which I do even though I don't play anymore) was into Wormwood. I've been asked a few times to go back there, but just can't find the players to do it with. If you have not read the Wormwood sourcebook, it was really really awesome.
Basically throughout time there have been groups of people transported to this living world called Wormwood, and now it is an amalgamation of all the groups. There were knights from the Crusades transported there, and the world kind of adapts to the wishes of the inhabitants. So there's a strong church element, with lots of demons and angels etc etc. Then in the 1950's, a biker gang strait out of "The Wild One" gets transported there. Its been hundreds of years, so all the Knights now ride motorcycles but have the attitude of a righteous biker gang of anti-heroes. Except of course for the purist aristocracy knights that try and curb the power of the biker gangs, but popularity with the public keeps them around.
Good stuff.
I try and limit what books my players have choices from, to help with the "balance". Grouping early Coalition stuff with the weaker books. Keeping the Coalition War campaign era seperated from the others. When it comes to Wormwood, you only need 1 book, and possibly ignore only one class(people that played Wormwood know which one).
So don't run away from Rifts. Remember even Tappy says "if you're having fun with it, you're doing it right"

I've always loved the setting of Rifts. Last time *I* used it, I used it with GURPS. I was running a GURPS system game, that ultimately was based off the Zelazny Amber books... but I was running it with a bunch of folks who knew nothing of their "heritage." They kept being thrown into different worlds, and stuck there for awhile. One of the first I used was Rifts earth. It was fun to use the fluff without the mechanics. So... if you really want Rifts, but hate the system, just use some other system. --Pukka Tukka

That's the problem, I don't actually hate the system. I know it's clunky as shit. I know one fight sometimes took 2 whole gaming sessions to finish up. But I also know that was because half the time was the group asshole trying to convince our GM physics bent THAT way.
I think my biggest problem is, I'm back in my old group's city, and I'm kinda scared if I ask my old GM to play, I'm gonna end up stuck with the rules lawyer asshole and all the other miscreants.

Embrace your Rifts need. I have recently been reminded forcibly of a long held belief that the game system doesn't really matter ...
WTF ?!?!?! JiB of course the game system matters ...
Nope, what matters is the people playing not what they are playing. If you have a clunky awkward game system but the gm and players are good and are fun it's going to work anyway and if you have a great game system but crappy gm and crappy players it's going to suck the ballsack regardless.
So, Rifts away man have fun with it, because as we say, like sex if everyone is having fun you're doing it right.
Cheers,
JiB

But yes, with GURPS.

Oops. Sorry Forresst, should have read this thread before encouraging our group to start a crazy Rifts campaign. We're just feeding your addiction now. Your new psi-slinger will be the comically large margarita to your gaming alcoholism.

Ahh. I can't wait to get this off the ground. It's like a slice of my chaotic childhood coming back. And as GM of this insane endeavor, I don't remember the rules anymore so we're gonna play fast & loose with all the crunch. I'm doing this for fluff primarily, but also to recapture some of my youth.
