Okay! I'll try and get it up tonight or tomorrow at the latest. That's what he said... before the invention of Viagra. Lol!..... Well here is some of it: Rokugan has never given specific rules to what offences are worthy for a duel. Most duels are because of a perceived insult against a samurai. Only samurai can challenge or be challenged, commoners are never permitted to engage in duels. Can challenge a samurai when he thinks he has been personally insulted, or his lord, clan or family. Can also challenge on behalf of family members who do not have the ability to themselves ie wife or children. A samurai can not challenge another samurai over an insult to another samurai. In example if I was insulted you couldn't challenge the offender. It would be up to me to do it. But a samurai who doesn't have a sword of their own like a courtier or shugenja can have a champion to fight for them. But both have to accept the results. So if you fight for me and you fail or die then I accept I was wrong. Or in the case of a duel to the death I commit seppuku. A samurai can get out of a duel with a sincere apology. But entails some loss of face. The book also says you'd lose glory mechanic too. If a higher rank samurai is challenged by a lower rank he can shrug it off. Some accept the duel in order to humiliate the challenger. On another note. Any magistrate is allowed to authorize a duel if the person wants trial by combat. Those duels are always to the death. Duels can also allow same social positions to find a answer to a problem. Duels can also take place on battlefields. Some times it'll be between samurai in the heat of battle or general vs general. Some protocols of duels are: -once a challenge is issued they must decide on the form of the duel. First blood or all the way to death. -if the duel is to the death then the samurai must both permission from their lords to partake. Some times a lord will refuse making a show of loss of face on the samurai. -next is the time and location of the duel. Usually done within a year. Taking too long to do a duel seems cowardice. -there are three participates. The two duellists and an impartial judge. The judge also announces names and titles of the samurai. Challenged samurai is given one more opportunity to apologize. There is a bit in the core rule book as well. Let me know if you need more

Thanks, that all pretty much confirms what I suspected with regards most duels being focused on insults and slights. Next time the player tries for a duel I'll keep that in mind.

Yes, also duels can be used in tournaments. Even a whole duelling tournament as well. Like how the Kami did for when they wanted to know who should rule.

Yeah, that's how we ended up with the big TC Hida Jimunsha when SirGuido ran the Topaz Championship for us.

So I'm really getting into writing haiku for the upcoming sessions, I'm finding it helps me focus on what might happen during the session and what seems (at least on the surface) to be the most important aspects. The poems for tonight are:
Pillars of smoke rise lazily from Northern flames But Terrel heads south
Is true love broken as the cherry blossom falls? A body, no soul

One of the things we did in our old campaign is that whenever your character died, you were NOT allowed to start a new character until you wrote the previous character's final haiku.

I had forgotten about that, will have to do that should we have any character deaths. Second session went much better than the first, will have an adventure log up sometime soon but one thing that did pop up - can shugenja determine if magic has recently been cast in the area and what would you use for it? They wanted to check to determine if maho or any regular magic had been cast. I said a typical shugenja wouldn't be able to magically detect maho but what about regular magic?

Yeah you could commune with a kami and ask them if anyone had asked for a favor recently. In terms of maho you could ask if there were any kansen (evil kami ) in the area recently. But it wouldn't be easy to get those concepts across so it would require raises.

Session Two reportSo overall much happier with this session, I'd prepared for the group to either investigate the pillar of smoke or to head south after Terrel the mad monk. They took the former and have now had their first combat which included a close call for one of the players (he took over half his total wounds from a single lucky strike but soaked 10 with void) so they've seen how deadly the game can be. Next combat will need to include some higher stats, the peasants they were up against were at only 3k2 to hit and missed all but 2 attacks thanks to the high TNs for most of the group. The trick will be balancing it against the low to hit TNs of the shugenja but I don't think that'll be too much of an issue. Next session (tomorrow) is where things will get interesting (I hope) as it should present a situation where an NPC has massively overreacted to a perceived threat that might not have been real. Also an older and wiser version of our favourite Topaz Champion might make a guest appearance to complicate matters.
