Aside from making the comparison to knights and gunslingers (ala Dark Tower Trilogy) a modern take on Excalibur could be my favorite hand gun...I own two! Call them my Bear pacififers...skip to 3:55 to get to the bone shattering action. Truly a gun worthy of the legend! Though they say the holster is 10 times as powerful as the gun itself...

Throw themes to the wind. Yeah themes are totally optional. If you want to fit it to the theme: They could have to take down an anti-hero who's losing their sanity. Or the players could be knights with their own qwerks. From what i looked up the definition for anti-hero is just a non-traditional hero who usually has a flaw.

I do like the idea of a fallen knight as an opponent, maybe a warlord leeching off the commoners.
The Book of Knights and Ladies supplement also has a breadth of character creation options, including playing as Picts and Saxons (the traditional enemies of Arthur and the native British), whom I would probably drift into animistic tribes and raiders and the like. So the PCs have the option of playing knights whose origins would make Arthur and co. treat them with suspicion. But if Merlin vouches for them...

There's also the wonderfully thorny aspect of a Quest for the Holy Grail...and the Enemy that keeps it.

Don't forget the Questing Beast and the likes of the trials of Gawain the Green Knight: AI's trying to reform The Round Table tied in with Gia and veneration for The Land ('the land are the King are one') do you have all sorts of pagan undertones, which firs well with a post apocalyptic land scape (cursed earth with nuclear winters and mass deforestation) Also - Vorpal Bunnies, 'you may call me . . . Tim' and 'The Knights of Nih' Aaron

Love the thought of bringing in Gawain and the Questing Beast, too. But this is all swiftly moving beyond the Jackercon one-shot. Dang it, y'all, you're going to make me plan a campaign.

The Holy Grail could be a blood sample that contains a gene sequence of a necessary post-apocalypse mutation: something mundane like a tweaked metabolism that results in a higher resistance to genetic degradation from the now higher level of background radiation. Aaron PS: it's ' x calibre' - there is only one

I had a similar thought, with a different conclusion (which I won't detail here to avoid spoilers, but maybe we can message about it). In any case, I think I like your solution better because there's potentially more drama and fallout from it.

I like it. Maybe they find the name in a tattered owner's manual or firearms catalog. Or it's a prototype and the gunsmith never made another (or someone made sure he/she never made another...)

Not to belabor the connection too far, but Smith and Wesson calls pistols with these cannon proportions (.500&.460) their X Frame models. No joke.
The one problem I could see potentially occurring with any take on an Arthurian legend is...does a PC get to be Arthur? Because for a one shot that's like a Star Fleet game with command structure issues..

Because for a one shot that's like a Star Fleet game with command structure issues.. Honestly, for the one-shot I was going to pull from the KAP's beginning scenario where the PCs are all newbie knights in the service of a lesser lord, and Arthur has juuuuuust been born. All of this wonderful stuff we have been chatting about here would probably happen in later sessions. Unless, of course, riding out with Arthur or seeking the Grail or something later in the Arthurian saga is what the players want.

Or skip that stuff, and have the Round Table knights be the classifications/nicknames of the powered armor suits. The Arthur suit has improved command and communications gear, etc.
