When I played the L5R ccg I ran a Lion honor deck. Or as people around here called it "Crane in Lion's clothing". Very unusual play style for Lion, but right up my alley as an Akodo player. In L5R while I was playing competitively I will agree that I didn't see very many people winning purely because they had access to more and better cards. MtG however... just look at any of the current popular YouTube channels and you will see that its different there. Most will show you a competitive deck build and then tell you how much it costs. As in, here is how much money you need to walk into your FLGS and BUY this deck as singles. If that doesn't scream pay to win, I don't know what does.

It's not, because you don't HAVE to shell out that cash. There were a bunch of people in the L5R crowd who used to claim that you needed to shell out massive cash to put together competitive decks. Even when I was playing Magic, I never payed more than ten dollars for any given card. There was someone at our store who had a world class competitive Magic deck who never payed more than 13.5 cents (cost per card from a pack). A little luck, some trade stock, and some shrewd trading is all that is really required. The problem with Magic is that it's so old that the pool of available cardboard has shrunk.

That's why they really need to find a way to better depreciate old cards and make people buy new ones. Otherwise Magic may as well go LCG like L5R.

Anyone still playing? I am thinking of going to a Learn to Play night at a FLGS. And I was wondering how the game is? Or how the scenes are like out there?
