The original BBT AP was an excellent story. Stork's Deus ex Machina use of a MoT to save the party was super story-making. It was like a movie ending: brave party almost achieves goal but nearly dies trying until allies come to their aid. That version of the MoT was a radical break from other RPG mechanics (that I know). I feel like the MoT has become watered down to just a kind of benny. Honestly, the amount of player power of the MoT in that version made me uncomfortable, but now I think it was super cool. Great stories aren't about rerolls. They are about extreme unexpected surprises, which regulate game mechanics don't generate often. I feel like that original MoT concept from BBT should be revisited. Maybe they shouldn't be earned. Maybe each player only gets one each session or for an entire story arc, but I think that super MoT was an amazing story device. Maby it can be a last will of a character before death? Ps. Yes I am the guy who keeps promoting character death on the forum...

That sort of thing can still happen. It costs 3 MoT to create an NPC -- I see no reason why that couldn't be the captain of the guard (who happens to have brought some men with him...).
They've just been devalued. They're easier to get, and the powerful stuff just costs more of them.
It's inflation.

Also, when a PC dies, every surviving PC gets 3 MoT (or MoTs, haven't concretely decided the plural yet).

stu I'm having problems downloading the episode, I'm doing it on my phone from happyjacks.org and it says "download waiting..." I could download another podcast so it's probably not a problem at my end. I'm of to bed now and will try again when I wakeup if it hasn't downloaded during the night.

One more nordic thing.
Runes where commonly used instead of latin letters in some areas (mainly Gotland and Dalarna) as late as the 16th century.
I would really like (to buy) a Scandinavia/nordic/viking setting book for BBT.
And there's an account of a Sami shaman defeating a Christian prest in a magical combat.

[. . .] 3 MoT (or MoTs, haven't concretely decided the plural yet). Huh. Interesting problem. I don't know how you pros go about making that decision, but I thought it might be worth checking how other authors/publishers pluralize common game acronyms. I checked GURPS, Fate and Traveller. Those books pluralized PC, NPC and GM as PCs, NPCs and GMs. (Except Traveller calls GMs Referees) IIRC, you don't like the Oxford comma, so I didn't use it here. Now my brain is itchy.

Stu Venable: regarding setbacks. If I'm remembering MoT correctly, 1's don't cancel out successes, just if you rolled 2 1's, it was a success with a setback? Pertaining to the argument that a more skilled character will have a higher chance of rolling more 1's (due to the larger dice pool), instead of getting rid of the setback rule, what about implementing it that if you roll more 1's than successes, there's a setback? And if you roll no successes and get 2+ 1's, then that's a crit failure, maybe? With the larger dice pool (and 5's and 6's needed for success), the chances of rolling more successes increases with the larger dice pool as well, but it won't be as easy to get a setback.

Hi Stu Venable and Crew - I just listened to most of the character creation session. What a fun setting! Greatly looking forward to the upcoming game. In case it could be helpful, I just wanted to say that I would be happy to help out with any medieval language stuff you'd like composed, translated or pronounced, as time and ability permit. I'm pursuing a degree in medieval British literature and have some facility with Medieval Latin, Middle English, Old French, and Middle Welsh. And anyone else on the forum is welcome to ask, too. Just let me know! P.S. - Welsh Scrabble has a boatload of W's and Y's, and since they are common vowels in the language, they are worth only one point apiece. It is apparently not a very popular game even in Wales (or at least in Carmarthenshire): www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2016/sep/24/scrabble-yn-gymraeg-the-board-game-no-one-wants-to-buy #themoreyouknow

Also, here's a link to the install files for a program called Domesday. It's a resource originally developed for the Pendragon RPG, but it also has some handy generators, such as name generators for specific regions of France, and an armorial generator that you can use to whip up coats of arms on the fly. www.jdrpg.com/pendragon/DomesdaySetup.zip

Yes, that's how the final draft will read. I'm going to mark the setback rules as optional as well.

Stu Venable: are the orcs in this setting normally so well-spoken? Or is this some of what stork mentioned in episode 2 of the players being more in the era?
