(Opening caveat: I do not work for Steve Jackson Games. I just think this is awesome.) I know that these forums are crawling with dedicated fans of RPG's, but if you have any inclinations towards old school board/war games, Steve Jackson is redoing his first game, OGRE, in a huge way. And by huge, it is a 14 pound box filled with massive geeky goodness! Initially done with a $20,000 goal to gauge interest, and the idea of a single print run of 3,000 games, it is currently north of $630,000 and has almost 4,000 backers (some of whom have ordered multiple copies). I post this for three reasons: 1. This is my football. I go online to check and see what the score, I mean level of support, the way football fans check on their teams. It is addicting. 2. The stretch goals have been outstanding, and are getting really fascinating. I would love to see them hit all of them, so I just wanted to get the word out. Plus, I'd LOVE to see a new edition of CAR WARS. 3. They are providing an amazing example of the power of crowd-sourcing for games. They confess that even they have been blown away by the support and it may well mean bringing OGRE back as a line of games You can find it here. There is also a fascinating tracker that shows levels of support in dollars (total and per day), number of backers (again, total and per day), and how it is trending to wind up here.

Happy Jacks should interview Steve again, maybe he'll be a little more optimistic about the industry after seeing Kickstarter results, and perhaps not call Stork mean names
The games industry relies on 2 things IMO, availability and places to play. The internet raised availability to places unthought of when I was a kid... but sadly it is killing the local stores that allow us to play.
Kickstarter proves there is more money out there for this kind of stuff than anyone thought. Classic style video games, new RPG edition rules, board games and more. We now realize publishers are just as much the slow un-evolving dinosaurs that the music industry was a little over a decade ago.
Unfortunately we need more than an "Itunes" of gaming to fix our problems... we need like a store that gets a deal with amazon to get packages faster and cheaper, that is made up of 30+ booths able to sit 8 people each, a way to keep the noise, and by popular demand "great air flow" to keep the stank low, and somehow doesn't get caught up in keeping a ton of inventory themselves. Rent the space, make the profit off renting the space(and maybe some vending machines), the gamers will come and they'll bring their own games.
or SOMETHING, there's gotta be a solution, we gamers want to THROW money at these game makers, where there is money, there is a solution

I would think that Cons and clubs are the most likely options for replacing/supplementing FLGS.

rickno7- I wrote a response to you, but decided to move it to a new thread ("Getting new gamers") so as not to hijack UTM's thread. I think this is a valid discussion, and I'd love to talk more about it, but I also want people to see and support the OGRE Kickstarter :-)

I'm an official $100 supporter. When the game arrives in (November? September? 2013?), I am offering to host an Ogre party in Los Angeles (San Fernando Valley) for those interested.
