www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2017/6/27/genesys/This seems the most appropriate sub-forum to post this. FFG is going to release a generic RPG using their Narrative Dice System in the fourth quarter of this year. This looks pretty neat, also the book will apparently only cost 40$US, which means it probably won't be a massive tome, which is also neat. I've wanted a fantasy game that uses that system for a while so this could be pretty awesome for me. Woot! From the article: The game will use the same six die types as Star Wars, with symbols that have the same effect, though I personally find these new symbols to be far more intuitive that the Star Wars ones. (You can see them in the article.) The book will also include details for five settings in different genres: Fantasy, Steampunk, Weird War, Modern Day, and Science Fiction. I don't know if those are supposed to be detailed settings or basically material and guidelines for running the game in those kinds of setting, the article seems a bit vague on that. They also plan to release future books to cover more types of settings. I'm quite eager to see what the game is going to look like. How about YOUUUUUUU?

Yes, just seen this. I've been looking at some of the narrative hacks out there recently, as well as tinkering with an L5R hack as well, so I'm in for this.
I'm not surprised at this either. Although the Warhammer RPG that first developed this system wasn't great, the Star Wars lines really are, and as those lines run out of steam, this seems like a natural evolution.

I have to say meh, merely from the custom dice front given my habit of losing dice. I know you'll be able to convert the rolls from regular dice but it'll be a pain and that is an instant turn off for me regardless of how well the actual system works. For that reason I really hope they don't shift L5R to it, I can see the appeal of a more narrative system for the game I would just rather it wasn't this one.

I'll probably just use my Star Wars ones, as I have, err, four sets.

I'm super excited. I'm about forty episodes deep into Campaign and really am loving the way the cast use Advantages/Threats as a way for players to exert narrative control. Really like the way dicepools are constructed and character advancements are going. Seems like a really great system that handles high crunch but also high narrative well. Especially excited to see it decoupled from Star Wars. As much as I love Star Wars, I'd probably never play a game in the setting. Not sure I'd want them to move L5R into GRPS but if they do I'd be interested to see what a Genesys L5R would look like. Over all I'm pretty stoked.

A couple of friends in my regular group and I have been tinkering with an L5R hack of this, but it sounds like FFG will beat us to it! It definitely can be done, and I've been looking specifically at F&D's Morality mechanic as a starting point to represent Honour, as for me this probably the most iconic thing about L5R. Not sure the narrative dice give me the right L5R vibe, but I'd be willing to try it out if that's the way FFG go with it.

The worst that could happen is not like it and go back to 4th edition. I'm just worried the narrative dice won't pack the same kind of punch that exploding d10s do.

Also I was looking around in the FFG Genesys sub-forum and someone pointed out that Genesys = GENEric SYStem.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who missed that.

Totally missed it too.
I'm pretty psyched about it. I tend to like two dimensional dice mechanics, at least in theory. I've never gotten to play this one, but I like ORE.

I read this press release with some interest.
Star Wars is not my bag, and I'm thinking that using a similar system with anothe setting/genre might work out well.
I really want to like the Star Wars dice system, and I'm certainliy willing to give it another shot. But, yeah, I'll use my Star Wars dice... assuming the distribution and such are the same.
And I agree regarding L5R. Roll and Keep is a great system. I too hope they don't abandon it in favor of dice sales.

So I mentioned this to my players last game... I thought they were going to revolt. Someone actually threw a dice at me! They all hated the system the last time and said they all wouldn't play it again. As much as I loved the system as a GM and thought it was fun to let them have more narrative control... they all hated it. Oh well... Maybe I will try and run a online game with it.

That sucks... You know what you should have done though, right? You shoulda just grabbed that die and thrown it back in that sucka's face and told that mutha that you will strike down upon his sorry ass with GREAT VENGEANCE and FURIOUS ANGER those who attempt to poison and destroy my games! And tell that ingrate: Thou shall playeth what I decree lest I decide to turn mine GM screen from thee and leave thee in the dark valley of the shadow of gamelessness! Thine disgrace is great you infidel and thou shalt not be forgiven without proper penance! Thou shall show gratitude for mine works and repent, lest I decide to remove mine blessings from thee and go write mine fucking novel! This thou shall doeth lest thou be made to faceth mine wrath and be made to walk on endless floors covered in sharp, metal d4s! Thou shall suffer wandering damage forevermore! Every roll thou maketh shall be decreed a dreaded CritFail no matter the number on the die! AND YOU WILL KNOW MY NAME IS THE GM WHEN I LAY MY VENGEANCE UPON THEE!!!
At least that's how I would have handled it, but you know, different strokes for different folks and all, I guess I'm just "old school."
