playing with a GM that never read the unarmed defender rules and assumed punches deal strength +1d4 and kicks dealt strength +1d6 lead to some very interesting patterns i have observed.
with kicks dealing shortsword damage and being one edge away from katana damage, players never needed to spend money on a melee weapon due to having 800 dollars in what amounts to free shortswords they don't need an action to draw.
because they never needed to buy a melee weapon, more money went to better guns, better armor and more ammunition.
characters never had to drop or change weapons, because anything they couldn't shoot with their rifles, they could kick for katana damage
this also made me consider how overpowered free quick draw would be, or free steady hands
i'm sure there are other edges that grossly change things when handed out as freebies
i wonder what you would add to the list.

That's not ignoring edges, it's ignoring the rules in such a way to drastically change the design and tone of the game. The difference here is that they rest of the game hasn't been adjusted to take that into account. I can think of a lot of genre settings / movies where punching and kicking are just as dramatically effective as swords but then guns etc are adjusted to account for that. Think a lot of martial arts movies, where the protagonist takes on a room full of armed opponents etc.

It's sort of if they were being given the Martial Artist and Improved Martial Artist combat edges "for free" with the only restriction being that the +d4 is for fists and the +d6 is for kicks. I'd say giving away nearly any combat edge for free could imbalance the game. But then there are Setting Rules that a GM can bring in to help reinforce a certain genre. If the game was Wuxia in style then maybe everyone IS a martial artist and gets those edges free. However given the exact situation that ilina describes, I think if I were to do that then I'd also give away some defensive edges to help re-balance things.
