So why can't we have a Shadowrun movie now? www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EZCBSsBxkoHumans, Orcs, Elves... everybody is just trying to get along. Get ready for the world of Bright, a new Netflix Original Film, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. Coming to Netflix December 22th.

Because the name is trademarked . . . Netflix likes to file off serial numbers to properties to which it doesn't have privileged access Think of it as Shadowrun lite . . . because those decayed cyberpunk urban settings increase the production costs. It's also a fantasy remake of Alien Nation (which I loved when it was on) Aaron

Get ready for the world of Bright, a new Netflix Original Film, starring Will Smith and Joel Edgerton. Coming to Netflix December 22th. Because the premise of Shadowrun is usually, "You play terrorists for hire." Burn Notice, Leverage, Ocean's 11... they all work because you see them as the good guys. Even if they are criminals, they are targeting the true bad people. In Shadowrun, that's a very small percentage of runs. Moreover, it would make for a bad power fantasy, with the shadowrunners constantly being forced to be the stooges for their corporate masters (being a freelancer and deniable doesn't exempt you from having to live under the heel of corporate power). I'd argue that WANTED was a better representation of Shadowrun in the mainstream media than Bright will be. Fantasy races and magic wands is only a part of the shadowrun experiance. WANTED gave us adepts (special people who could do amazing things, but not overt magic), a world full of corp stooges, and the power fantasy of escaping that shitty life. It had corruption (a staple of shadowrun), gunfights (no shadowrun related media should lack a good gunfight), and mystic elements (Lazarus pit like pools of healing anyone). To me it felt like the fantasy races where just placeholders for ethnicities in the bright trailer. Another cop movie about ethnic tensions in the hood and an object of power (which we could have likely replaced with a tactical nuke or some other portable item of mass destruction) bringing all of them into conflict? Not really a new idea, just a new skin for it. Not all ideas need to be new, but I'm not going to jump up and down because a movie has elves or orcs in it. I'll watch it, but I'm not waiting with baited breath. I'm especially not worried about them "ripping off" shadowrun. You can't own the idea of Urban Fantasy (since Bright isn't even set in the future or to any kind of cyberpunk or transhuman theme that I can tell).

Yeah, even though this looks like a reboot of Alien Nation wearing glamour-riddled props, I am super excited for this movie.

Ok, so I watched this yesterday.
... and I really don't get the hate it's receiving. Sure, it's cheesy and corny, but I was expecting that. The "worst movie of 2017"? Not by a lot. It was a fun watch. About what I was expecting from the premise.

It was a fun watch. About what I was expecting from the premise. Only the professional critics say it’s bad - the audience score is very good. Good enough for Netflix to commission a sequel already. Another case of rotten tomatoes having a huge disparity between critics and audience. Pundits say it means RT is a valueless measure - I say those pundits are the critics and it is their measure that is proving to be valueless. Aaron

I'd like to see some more of the fantasy races and how that world differs from ours despite the similarities. We saw some centaurs and dwarves were mentioned, but only humans, orcs, and elves were in the spotlight. What else is there? I know there was a street sign with a lizard-like creature on it, and a woman in the disco had reptilian eyelids when she blinked. Do fantasy species from other cultures exist as well? How is world history different?
My tabletop RPG nerd brain is in overtime wanting to fill in the details of the setting..

I thought it was a premise that deserved more time, but the movie as it stands was kinda crap. Lazy story, bad dialogue, and gagging on tropes the whole way through.
Take a shot every time someone tells Will Smith his family depends on him.
I wanted very much to dig it. I did not.

Started out rather strong and pretty beautifully staged. Then the DM worries the players aren’t paying attention so all the NPCs began rehashing dialogue and plot points. THIS IS A WAND. IT IS BAD. THIS IS A BRIGHT. THEY CAN USE WANDS.
A Tarantino version of this thing would have been great...

Yeah, it's a bit ham-handed, and a number of key points were not just telegraphed but featured prominently in the previews. I still liked it a whole bunch, and like ErikaOdd, my GM hindbrain was busy trying to fill in world details.

It was also interesting to have a film's "manic, pixie dream girl" be a literal Manic Pixie Dream-Girl.

Someone said it's being turned into a series, but I can only find confirmation on a sequel being greenlit. Anyone else see news about a series?
